Best Barrel Length for 375 with BOSS? Login/Join

I am having a BOSS put on my A Bolt 375. It has a 26 inch barrel. If the barrel were shortened to 22 or 24 inches, would all of the powder still burn efficiently? As it is, the recoil is killing me. Best -

TED, I wouldn't put a BOSS on any gun I owned. I once Mag Na Ported a .375 H&H, which did help with the recoil and better yet keep the muzzle jump down a lot.......without changing the looks of the rifle any, some never even noticed the porting job. The porting really works on the .375 caliber, not so much on the bigger calibers though. I like a barrel length of no longer than 24 inches for general hunting, in the bush and thick stuff, I'll take a 22 inch barrel. [Smile]

An add-on BOSS? Who's doing it?

I would try to put on a good recoil pad first. You will be surpised that a good pad would help tame the pain down quite a bit. If this is still not enough, then I would have a removable brake installed. Mag-na-port International can do a mag-na-brake. Good luck.

The best length of barrel with a BOSS, is what ever length it is WITHOUT the boss. [Roll Eyes]
As suggested, have a real recoil pad installed, befor adding anything as ugly and noisy to the barrel. After the recoil pad, you can have the barrel Magna-ported, if needed. Either a SILVERS pad from Cape Outfitters, or a Pachmier Decelarator, will make life a lot easier. The 375 H&H isn't a hard kicker in most rifles, but I would be reluctant to add a BRAKE of any sort to a real rifle! uglYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

TED.....You have gotten some very good advice from a coupleo folks who know what there speaking about when it comes to guns.

One thing I didn't mention to you was this, you can get a PAST RECOIL PAD and wear it over your shoulder or have it sewen into a vest. My wife has one and it lets her shoot a 338 mag when wearing this pad. She has had 2 cancer operations in that area. I know you won't be disaapointed and you can still add on that Decelarator Pad also, good idea regardless. [Wink]

Chigger,

Did you notice any difference in accuracy after Magna-Na-Porting your .375? I've got one that I've been concidering doing that to. It's a fairly light-weight rifle with a 21.5" barrel.

No disrespect meant but rather than buggarise around with a boss, trade that .375 in on a cz 550 .375 you will have a little extra weight and you will also get a pachymeyer pad, CRF all steel action and you can shoot the thing all day with no recoil drama's.

As your in America the CZ's are a good price. Please do not take what I have said the wrong way, it is just a thought. The boss will be very hard on your ears. I fired my cz .375 without muffs the other day and with it's long 25" barrel it was fine, but once you break/boss it you MUST wear ear protection, I mean you probably should all the time but there are times when your hunting that it is just not practical.

Regards PC

Since I shoot left handed, I doubt that I'd find a CZ like it. I didn't mention that my rifle is left handed.

Tomorrow is the shipping date, but I will hold off and try a better recoil pad. I will also check Magnaport's web site and see what they have to offer. Thanks - Ted

I'm going to respectfully disagree with the other posters here. I have a .375 Browning stainless stalker with a Boss. this gun has a 24 inch barrel and while its an UGLY thing, It has killed afew OZ Buff, a Kudu and a whole bunch of other AFRICAN critters. It's main reason to be is it's light. Try carrying a heavy .375 all day in PC's NT in 90 degree heat( 110 % humidity). This .375 hits 2550 fps with 300 gr woodleighs and shoots through two buffalo's shoulders at 50 yrds.
The boss is essentially a tuneable muzzel weight and muzzel break at the same time. It flat works! Yes you can tune the gun till it groups optimally! I've never had a problem with it and I like Muzzel brakes. While increased weight is the best thing to decrease recoil, remember that it works against you if you have to carry it for any distance. They are unquestionably loud, but frankly I like my guns load and in the bush you will never hear it anyway. A tripple X recoil pad will help, but a good brake will help alot more. Go for it. You can always take it off!-Rob
