Frans Diepstraten.505 Gibbs dies
A friend asked me on behalf of a friend of his, where the latter can find dies for the .505 Gibbs. I assume therefore that it is not a regularly encountered item...?
Any suggestions that I can pass on?
Frans
If he doesn't mind spending about $350 for a good quality set, get them from RCBS. I got those after experiencing CH4D problems.
The .505 Gibbs is rare enough that it falls into the "custom" pricing level, from RCBS.
No such price level exists at CH4D.

Buy RCBS - Try Hutington's
RIP - Maybe they are custom price from RCBS because they work, unlike CH4D !!!
As you said, you had problems with CH4D so you
had to buy twice.
IMHO, buy once well and be done with it.
My time is more valuable than the few $ you save and the frigging around you get.

Virginia CreeperI also had problems with the CH4D dies. RCBS dies and shell holder made life better.
Remember that these dies require a larger than normal press. These are large diameter dies.
In truth, I had to get a second RCBS shell holder.
I contacted RCBS directly and had great service. No one is offering discount on custom order dies from RCBS, so think of dealing there directly.

walksfarOddly, I've never experienced problems with 4-d dies. They always worked good for me. But, like mentioned above, you are still looking at about $160.00 for a set for the Gibbs.

Idaho SharpshooterI dunno, I only have nine sets of CH4D rifle dies; but all have worked flawlessly for a period of at least one year, some over ten years.

Canuck32My ch4d dies for 505 gibbs worked fine but the shell holder would not accept either jamison or Horneber brass without some modifications (opening was too narrow for brass).
If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

jeffeossoCH4d should be fine. I have had
585 nyati
550 mag
550 express
500 jeffe
470 mbogo
470 ar
458 ar
416 ar
so, just a couple... i don't use Dave's shellholders, as they are generally "too tall" in the slot, and leads to troubles priming

They are crude looking compared to other manufacturers but, my .404 Jeffrey dies work perfectly even when I use them to form .404's out of RUM cases.

georgegibbs505Have your friend or you look in the classified adds, i have alot of components for the 505 incl dies, bullets and brass.
I received CH4D dies for my 10.75x68 a few weeks ago but haven´t had a chance to try them yet. I´d say they look OK but I will polish the insides a bit as they look a little rough.
That said of the reloading dies I have the Hornadays are the only ones that have given trouble -especially in 30-06. I bought a set of Lee dies for that and they work like a dream (even if they look cheap).
