With these shoots popping up from Kaliforny to Montana to Texas, I am feeling deprived out here in blistering hot Southern Oregon. I can't afford a lot of travel time, but would surely love to rub shoulders with some of the other fellas here who shoot anything from 9,3 X 62 on up, including doubles, singles, bolt guns, Martinis, Sniders, whatever. Is there any interest in organizing some sort of informal shoot, preferably along the I-5 corridor, that might draw folks from Northern Cal and southwest Washington? This might have to wait until next spring, as I know lots of us have deer and elk seasons (and college football) on our minds just now. This is only an attempt to gauge interest. I came across a head-on Cape buffalo target the other day and it got me to thinking ... There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

I'd be up for it, I know there have been double rifle shoots over in central Oregon. Chub Eastman wrote one up in Rifle a few years back, I believe it was held on a range near Bend. Problem is finding a range that will allow group shoots and has the backstops necessary for the moving targets. Can't think of a place in the valley that has that, just off the top of my head.

Or45: Yes, I read Chub's story. I think the shoot was in LaGrande, and that Ross Seyfried had something to do with it. Could be all wet, but then, I am a well-rusted native Oregonian. I would think almost any range that can host a cowboy action shoot could host a big bore shoot. We're not talking .50 BMGs here, so backstops shouldn't be too much of an issue, I would think. I am in, but it has to be May-September for me to attend as I am in the ski buisness and too busy to play other times. I live in Bend and am willing to travel in state. Matthew

Matthew: I am always willing to travel to Bend. Isn't there an excellent range out toward Millican? Not exactly I-5 corridor, but being in the sage and juniper country is always a big treat for me. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

The shoot your talking about is held in Baker Or. It was last week end amd is held every two years. Buck Buchner and Keith Kearcher are the primary organisers. Another group in Bend had one last year as a trial and are planning on having one in the off years of the Baker shoot. 465H&H

Yup, my mistake. It was in Baker City; a ways out from the valley, but certainly worth the drive. I like the Bend idea, and many Portlanders can make a day or an overnight trip out of it.

The Baker shoot is an invitational. Not sure how you get one. It is the Baker shoot that Chub Eastman wrote about. 465H&H

I used to hold shoots at the Redmond Rifle Range in the '80s. Haven't been back there in years so I don't know what their policy is nowadays. It seems to me that someone could find an old rock quarry to hold a shoot at. I'm going to Clark Rifle Range this Sunday to shoot my .458 Lott and .416 Taylor. .

whenever, sign me up for it. I might even bring my 550 Gibbs for the S&M group to enjoy. Rich DRSS

I can arrange for the use of the Roseburg Rod & Gun Club 100-200 yard range, probably at a cost of about $2 per shooter to use the facility. That's what we normally charge, anyway. It is a nice facility right at the Winchester Exit of I-5, 5 miles north of Roseburg. However it has no provision for moving targets, and likely never will have. It is right on the North Umpqua River (great swimming hole too) which provides excellent Salmon, Steelhead, and Trout fishing and the 100 + acre facility also has trap, sporting clays, pistol, & small-bore ranges, and a 70+ acre field archery layout. There are electricity and water available right at the firing points. Best of all, there are about 20+ acres set aside as a well-treed, grassy picnic area with BBQs which will handle up to half a beef each, modern handicap equipped Loos, electric lighting, water, tables for up to 100 shooters and a loud-speaker system for having lunch and addressing groups of shooters, etc. No full-auto arms allowed without special prior approval by the Board of Directors. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

The Baker shoot is primarily a double rifle shoot. There is one stage for big bore bolt rifles and one for combination guns. The others are all for small bore, medium or big bore doubles. 465H&H

Guys, it sounds like finding facilities won't be an issue. Picking a date probably will. I am sure that we can rig a couple of temporary moving target setups. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author
