My plinking loads are 115 grains of IMR 4350 behind a 500 gr. FMJ Hornady. Those bullets are fairly inexpensive.

I have a few boxes of Barnes 500 gr solids and a box of 600 gr slugs but the data in the Barnes book No. 2 won't really work as the C.O.L. is way too long. I don't have any H414 or VIT N150 for the latest load data they show for the 500 grainer. And they don't list any new data for the 600 grain slug either.

I'd like to know if anyone here has any favorite loads for their .460 Weatherbys.

110gr IMR-4350 with the 450gr TSX for about 2450fps. I have a H-414 load for the 500gr TSX but no groups yet. Can't recall the weight of the powder, but it was doing 2525fps. The banded solids were 8" left at 100yds with the 414 and grouping about 4". When I tried Hornady 500gr I found 2500fps was tops with 4350. Maybe my gun is slower.

I only ever used IMR4350, and then only with Hornady and Woodleigh 500gr SN bullets. So I guess I cannot really help. Like PoppaW my MkV didn't like to exceed 2500fps with a 500gr pill, and the 1 box of factory ammo I shot didn't either.

I use the 405 grain Remington Sp's with H 380. Nice accurate load, like shooting a heavy 375 for practice. Finish up the session with a few of your full power loads to maintain your feel for those loads. Load these for my son's rifle.

Hard cast lead also good with 5744.

Be careful shooting FMJ's in your gun. They are hard on the barrel. Monolithic solids are more expensive but give less wear and tear. I use Hornady old style 500 gr. soft points for practice and letting folks shoot my gun.

120gr! I can't get that much in my cases. I have a short drop tube and every thing. Not that I need to hit 2600 but it would be nice for others to shoot Big Grin

The load use is 115 gr. of IMR 4350. Gives me 2410 fps out of a 24" barrel. Hornady 500 gr. soft points are inexpensive to use.

I use neck-sized cases which give me the most case volume available, yet there is no way I can get a 500 gr. BARNES monolithic solid in there. In fact, BARNES Number Two lists a starting load of 107 gr., but that fills the case way too much also. Obviously the monolithic solids are longer than a conventional lead core slug, but it surprises me that they would publish that data. I'm guessing I'll need to pick up some H414 if I want to shoot those BARNES solids. The box of 600 grainers I have? I'll probably just use the published data I have and load them singly.

Thanks for all the replies!

Joe, Check out the reloading pages on this site. The loads listed work very well.

Poppa,

One fills the case chuck full, seal with bees wax. To load you insert loose bullet into breech of rifle and then insert the "blank" behind it. My experience has been similar to yours. I do not believe much of the published data for the 460 WM. How does one get 126gr of 4831 beneath a 500 gr bullet with a COL of 3.67"????

I agree. I always wondered about a 460 improved. The barnes bullets eat up much needed space. Or think of it like a 450 Dakota and push them a little slower. I would like to try some factory and see how fast they really go.

FWIW, Factory 500 gr. FMJ move out of my 24" barrel at around 2550 fps, where my hand loads go right at 2410. Recoil with the factory stuff is a bit stiffer, naturally.

Joe,

My MkV had a 24" barrel (Classic Mark) and it would do between 2480 and 2520 with factory fodder. For decades Weatherby's magnum ammo (all of it) was loaded with DuPont IMR4350, just a bit of ammo trivia.

Mine has a 24" also. Well a 26" with the pendelton brake. So 24" of real bbl. I guess I am close for speed then, good to hear.
