If I remember right... this cartridge is based on a 460 case, shortened to 2.85", with no shoulder, and having a good amount of taper. My question is... Does anyone own a 495? Or know anyone who does? Also... being that it is designed to have a 3.6 OAL but would have a .582" base... would this be much of problem in a M-70 or Rem 700? Is this a viable rimless 500? Extol or condemn. take care, smallfry

I thought about this conversion once. It appeared that a single stack would be the best approach, with regard to magazine arrangement, on a M70. The action is strong enough for the 495 A-Square if a single stack magazine is used. If you attempt a staggered I would be concerned with the opening up of everything to get it to feed.
One thing to be mindful of with a belted case in a single stack magazine is overall length of the magazine box.

Smallfry- Don't even bother with anything the TOADE/ TEG ( BSmeister)has to say. The 495 A-square is kinda the bastard child of the 500 A2. While it can be done on a M70, your gonna be bucks ahead and have increased performance with a CZ550 going to the 500 A2. I've done this and if you want more details, E-mail me.-Rob

Thank you for your invite to email you Rob. Honestly I just wanted to hear if anyone had a 495 a-sq and how it was working out for them. I have been wanting a 500 A-sq for some time, however I have many projects ahead of this one (and I am a poor student) A more noble sacrificial project.... I have on the chopping block... one stainless Ruger Number one, brand new, in 45-70. I will convert it into a 500 3", with a special quoted 1-12" twist stainless brl from pac-nor. I have a few ideas for it ... such as a solid 1/4 rib in stainless with a very ordinary "sour dough" rear sight and a stainless front with NECG interchangable elements... obviously the front blade will also have to be custom as NECG doesnt have them in stainless. The "band" on the front sight will not be part of the front sight but will be a band that has been left there after turning the brl. Though brl sling bands look nice ... I have no use for them as I feel slings are dangerious. When i am hunting and need both hands to climb I have a nylon that is in my pocket or through my belt loop(pants are never small enough for a smallfry). And then there is the stock . If ya have any ideas jot me back... my email will be updated sometime this week. Just jot back on this thread. take care

Smallfry, you say your No1 is a 45-70, I think, if so, then the rifle will be hard to rebarrel to 500NE 3". When a No1 is rebarreled the new barrel has to be very close to the same conture as the origenal barrel. A barrel of the same size as a 45-70 is going to be mighty light for a 500NE 3". The 500NE 3" No1s are usually built either on the No1 V action, with it's bull barrel re-bored, or the 458 Win Mag tropical rifle, either re-bored, or re-barreled. The one re-chamber for the 45-70 that makes very good sense is to 458RCBS, as this is a simple lengthening of the 45-70 chamber, to accept a case length of 2.75", and throated to handle 500 gr bullets, then use 450 gr softs, and solids with about 64.o grs of IMR4064 to start then work up, to a max of about 68.5 grs. This will require a good recoil pad be installed, and the recoil is nowhere near a 500NE 3".
