I purchased a Remington 700 in .416 Rem Mag a few years ago and I had it out the other night looking at it and wondering if I will ever get to take it hunting. I noticed the barrel had "416 REM MAG" at the left rear of the barrel and a couple of proof marks. It has open sights on it and nothing else. I noticed my other rifles have at least a couple lines of words in the middle of the barrel. Is this a factory setup or is this a custom job? The action has Remington 700 and the serial number on it. Thanks.

Sounds to me like some one put a custom barrel on a rem 700.

If it doesn't refer to 'Remington Arms, Ilion, N.Y.', it is probably an aftermarket barrel.

Also, I doubt those are proof marks, as the U.S. doesn't have a proof house.

I take it you bought the rifle 'used'.

Yes, I bought it used. It looks as if it hasn't been fired much if any. It has the pretty checkered stock with the rosewood forearm cap.

It sounds like a handsome rifle.

Take the action out of the stock to check its bedding (hopefully, it was 'glass- or steel-bedded). Does it have two cross-bolts in the stock?

If everything looks good, go ahead and shoot it. Big Grin

I have not had the chance to take it apart yet to see if it has been bedded. It does have two crossbolts in the stock. The bolt is plain (you can see the turn marks from the lathe, otherwise it looks smooth) whereas my other rifles have the "jeweled" bolts. The barrel has several marks on it. On the left side rear it has "416 REM MAG", "PJ", and what appears to be two elephant tusks touching back to back. On the right side rear of the barrel is "REP" enclosed in an oblong circle, "4", and a sideways "B" enclosed in a triangle. The open sights on this rifle appear to be regular Remington BDL open sights, and not the Dangerous Game sights found on African models.

That's a lot of stamping for an American barrel job. Sounds like it was assembled outside the US and brought in later.

Upon further research, it appears certain that REP inside the oval is a Remington mark, denoting 'Remington English Proof" (a proof load was fired in the gun, and it survived Big Grin).

The letter inside a triangle denotes a Magnaflux test.

The "4" may be the month the rifle was assembled (e.g., May (January is '0'). Is there a letter visible next to the "4" (that would denothe the year)?

It looks like that gun was a Custom Shop offering (they don't put all the rollmarked verbiage on the barrels used in the CS).

Thanks George. There is no letter next to the "4". It is by itself near the "REP".
Here are some pictures of the rifle. I just took the pictures (sorry for the amatuer quality).

You might have some luck contacting Remington and/or the Custom Shop to find out when the gun was built, and with what specs.

That stock looks like what I've got on my Rem700 Capstick. It was originally fitted onto a factory Rem700 BDL in 375H&H, but I think that a run of 375H&Hs may have been produced with a heavier than standard barrel which I believe is what mine was... not 100% sure.

Thanks George and BusMaster007 for the info. I may contact them to get the history on my rifle.

Con, my rifle is heavy. The barrel looks like a varmint barrel except it has a big hole in the end of it. I have a factory Win Model 70 in .470 Capstick and it is a smaller profile barrel than the Rem .416.

That .470 Capstick is some round, isn't it? The buffalo in the photo below was impressed. Big Grin

George,
Nice buffalo and nice rifle! Mine does not have a muzzle brake on it. It sure could use one! Eeker The .470 Capstick may not be the most powerful .475" caliber, but it is all I need! Indeed it is a fine round.

Grizzinater,
My serial number does being with a "C". Sounds like we have similar rifles. I hear bad things about Rem 700 as DGR rifles, but this is one fine piece of machinery. It is one of my favorite rifles along with my Win Model 70 in .470 Capstick.

recoilpad,
Yep the 375H&H barrel was a truck axle, almost varmint contour. The factory Rem700s I've handled in 416Rem where also very muzzle heavy... damn wish I'd bought one though when I had the chance, but none I've seen had the same stock yours is fitted with.
Cheers...

PS: Recoilpad, what dies are you using for your Capstick?

Con,
No dies yet on the Capstick. I have ammo from Asquare.

I just found out that this rifle's stock is unique to the Remington 700 "C" grade out of the custom shop. It is a very nice stock

Interesting...? The serial number on mine is a B prefix, pretty sure the rifle didnt come out of the custom shop. I just checked and it definately looks to be the same stock, forend and pistol grip capped. But mine now has two crossbolts and an extra large recoil lug glass bedded into the stock Cool.
I haven't given the Capstick the attention it deserves, might take it out to play some.
Cheers...
