Rechambering my Ruger 375 H&H magnum to a Bigger Bore ?
To the Group:

I was surfing on the 470 Mbogo page an saw a converted ruger magnum to 470. This got me thinking I have a ruger in my safe right now that has been sitting since I got my 416 rem. What I really want is a bigger caliber(460 G&A, 470 Mbogo, 470 chapstick, 500...). I love the rugers style so converting it would be great. I am not sure how much it would cost what calibers I could upgrade to given the current bolt face... I was wondering if anyone has done this with their ruger. I bought the gun for $800 and the new 416's and 458's are selling for $1400. Any recomendations would be great.

A rebore on the RSM makes sense, saving the 1/4 rib & banded front. The bbl. is big enough & something on a H&H case should feed well. Maybe a .470Capstick?

Couldn't have said it better. Capstick gets my vote as well.

You would have to ask the experts here if there is enough meat in the barrel to rebore it to that caliber.

Good luck!

The ruger RSM barrel is phenominally thick, as it is the same outside from the 270 through the 458 lotts.. and there used to be an outfit that did 505 gibbs as a rebore.

pederson (cutrifle.com) or dubell can do this, for about $300.

there is no point in doing it as a capstick, as it is huffin and puffing to get anything over 2300 with as short a barrel as the RSM's have.

Hamilton Bowen did a run of 505's for Great Northern Guns, I believe they had 5 rifles made.

I believe Cliff LaBounty did the re-boring. I also thought I hord Cliff retired and sold his equipment to someone else.

I'd agree, no reason to use the belted mag case in such a big action. The 470 Mbogo is the perfect choice, unless you want something bigger Big Grin

I find a Ruger RSM II chambered for 458LOTT, and sell the 375 H&H. Since La Bounty retired I don't trust anyone else to rebore a fine barrel. Re-bores don't always turn out well.

The Lott makes a fine DGR in the Ruger, and though you can go bigger, you won't go BETTER in that rifle! The 375H&H, and the LOTT use the same parent case, which means less feeding, and magazine problems! Of course what you do doesn't have to make sense, all that is required is you wanting to do what you want! beer

Rebore to capstick would be a good thing I reckon !!
