Had some recent big bore coaching and one of the things we worked on was site picture before , during and after the cartridge has gone off. My coach wanted me to focus on the target with the sites lined up how I thought they should be, concentrate on trigger pull and try to see the puff of smoke the cartridge creates out the end of the barrel after the gun goes off, before I blink. I've done the "concentrate on target" and trigger control exercises before but have never heard about the puff of smoke after the gun goes off. After a few tries at seeing this it came to me. Made a hell of a difference! Has anyone else heard of this or is this something my coach has come on in his own training. I can't wait until our next range session to discuss this with him. Is this his version of follow thru? This exercise was with iron sites only. The only easy day is yesterday!

Yes, it is part of follow through. Doesn't matter much what you want to call it, it is part of successful technique. You want a good sight picture before, during, and after. The looking for the smoke is the during and after. The sight picture already looked good before, or else you wouldn't have squeezed the trigger. I have used it in traditional archery, shotgun, smallbore and pistol shooting. It also applies to many recreational sports. You can also use it for shooting scoped rifles if you keep both eyes open.
