Emailed CZ, I want a FS550 in .40+

Scott LeonardEmailed CZ, I want a FS550 in .40+
I emailed CZ and Ruger. I want a 20" 416/458.
Ruger: If you can't do walnut, put the Alaskan .416 Ruger in a laminated stock and call it "African". I will not buy a black stocked rifle.
CZ: Chamber FS550 in .416ruger and .458win. Sit back and watch how fast they sell.
I can't believe they haven't done it yet.
I would think there would be a good market for either.
I'm not going to hold my breath for their reply but, am I the only one that sees a niche for a short, handy open sight .40+ from a manufacturer? I was going to have one built as I don't see any offered.

KabluewyThere are so many possibilities with this that it stretches the imagination.

IMO, you are on the right track, thinking the base action is a Ruger or CZ 550 (medium not Safari)
When you say "black stocked", my first response is that Hogue makes other colors too, just switch stocks.

If you meant to say something else, then there is more to the conversation.
Your best and most effective bet is to take a factory offering and modify it to suit you. The least expensive is start with a Ruger Alaskan, sell the "black" stock, and get a custom laminate reinforced and bedded in all the proper ways, to fit you. Have the metal coated in the color that you like. That's about as simple as it's gonna get.
I doubt that either CZ or Ruger will ever offer an out-of -the-box rifle that's just right, in this category.
I have a custom Ruger in 458WM that I like very much. I tried feeding 458wm shells through the CZ 550 medium action that I have and it's very smooth. This is an action initially barreled in 7mm Mag, so the bolt face and follower and magazine is different compared to the 30-06 action. I would really like a CZ Medium in 458 or 416R.

Scott LeonardKB,
Black stocked- I started to say plastic stock. But would have been taken to task for not accurately describing Hogue overmoulded.
Plastic, then dipped in rubber. It don't get any uglier than that.
I do have one, (green) it's my all around truck gun and gets beat. That's why I bought it.
A FS550 in .416ruger would sell.

PhatmanIf I can ever lay my hands on another CZ550FS with nice wood. I might have to rebarrel it to 10.75x68 Mauser.
I would not have normaly considered this cartridge, as I thought the brass was impossible to find, but I have learned that it's available and really not that hard to make from Magnum basic.
I think the 10.75x68 would be just sweet in a full stock carbine.

Scott LeonardI put this question on gunsmithing. Can I rebarrel the cz 550 med lux in 7mm rem mag to .416 ruger?
It's 7.3 lbs w/24" barrel. 3 down. .532" bolt face same as .416 ruger.
I like the bavarian stock for open sights. NECG rear peep and african front hooded sight on a 21-22" med-heavy barrel.
My gunsmith is going to get back to me. Anybody know if this would work?

PhatmanIts Bertram, Buffalo Arms has an ample supply. But at $78 for 20 its not cheap.
Now another forum member talked about machining off the belt of Magnum Basic and making that work.
I have not done this but IF it works it would be very cheap indeed.

PhatmanThe guys over at Realguns.com seem to have answered this question.
They took a cz550 in 9.3x62 and rebarreled it to 375 Ruger.
www.realguns.com/articles/212htmA 416 Ruger should be just as easy.
Although now that I'm thinking about it.
A 10.4x62 Impala (aka 400 Brown Whelen) would be real sweet also.
So many choices

What's stopping you from just rebarreling onje to whatever you want?
After I read the entire thread I see this is touched on

2BarrelsDon't understand why you don't just rebarrel a CZ550 from 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag to .416 Ruger. I too was fed up with the BS answers I got from Ruger with regard to a wood stocked version of the .416. In the end I rebarreled both a M700 and M70 Classic that started life as 7mm Rem Mags. No issues feeding what so ever with either.

Scott LeonardThanks for the info. I was curious if it had been done in the Full Stock 550 med re: crossbolts and full stock etc. handling the recoil. I've never had a Mannlicher stock rebarreled.
The medium Lux 7mag looks to be a simple rebarrel.
I didn't see a .532 boltface caliber offered in the FS.
I'm thinking ghost ring sight from Brownells and NECG front.
