A couple of weeks ago I decided to put a scope on my 404 Jeff and see how it worked. As I was adjusting the eye relief I got the front ring too close to the objective lens and the lens shattered. Leupold quoted me $84 to replace the lens so off it went with a check for $84. Today they called and advised me they no longer have the appropriate lens for the M8 3x and are sending me a nib matte finished 2.5x as a replacement...no additional charge. They also apologized that they were unable to repair the one I broke and thanked me for my business. Needless to say, I will not be buying anything but Leupy's in the future! thumb I have sent them half a dozen or so scopes over the years for repair or service and it has cost me a total of $84. Too bad all the firearms-related companies don't have such high regard for their customers, their products, and their reputations!

Good hunting,

Andy

Nice customer service but personally I'd want the x3 Leupold back and try and get it repaired from another source. The longer tube length makes them much easier to fit on anything approaching a magnum length action. The 2.5x is a great scope though and at least the manufacturer stood by their product. Well done Leupold, just wish you'd bring the old 3x back!
Cheers...

My take is that if you've had that many that needed service I'd walk and find a reliable supplier of optics.

Sorry friend but I'm not of the opinion that Leupold is a good supplier of rifle scopes.

VapoDog,

I probably should've qualified that...any time I have bought or traded for a used Leupold I sent them to be checked out. One 3x9 VariX II that I thought was defective (bought new 20 years previously) was fine...turned out the Model 70 scope mount holes were crooked and putting the scope in a bind. The only one that I needed repairs on was the one I broke. I started out with Redfield, then Weaver, then Zeiss, then went to Leupolds about 20 years ago and haven't looked back (with the exception of a Nikon on my 22-250.) I know there is better glass out there...I'm just too cheap to pay for it. What optics do you prefer?

Good hunting,

Andy

I like two thing about Leupold:
1. their country of origin...here.
2. their warranty...no charge life of the scope.

Is there anything else I need to bring up? Thought not.

Thanks for the clarification.

My experience with Leupold so far has been mixed and wondered if your post told me something about the real animal. I'm thinking of another 3-9 X 33 ultralight and wondered if it really was worth the $300+.

I sent a Leupold back because it was bent. They sent me a new scope back and said it wasn't. Hard to not like them.

Just curious vapo, what scopes do YOU like? I've shot just about all of the brands & owned many of them. I keep coming back to the Leup. Now I only buy the VXIII, except for one 3-9x33 compact. I find them rugged & bright for the money. Yes there is better glass out there but at a price. I do also like the Zeiss Conquest.

My favorite is a 3-9 Leupold on a M-70 FWT in .257 Roberts. It's just light and bright.

Next in my like list is several old K- scopes from weaver. A K-6 is among my favorites and I have three others.

but (don't throw up now) the scope I use and really have had excellent luck with is a lightweight 3-12 X 40 without an AO by TASCO. I've never had any trouble with any of them and they're priced dirt cheap.

When I left on my plains game safari I took the Tasco as it had been a most reliable scope on my 300 H&H.

Call them as you want, I have maybe a dozen of them on such guns as .223 to .375 H&H and have never had a complaint.

The clarity isn't spectacular but I can easily see the 30 caliber bullet holes at 100 yards. It's good enough for the kind of girls I go out with.

I have a number of Leupolds, and always will.

I have not needed their repair services, but prior to my last trip to Austria, my father-in-law (in Austria) asked me if I could get him a special order Leupold.

With less than two weeks to spare, I called Lance Hendershot from Hendershots and told him what I needed.

He called me back within an hour and told me that the scope my father-in-law wasn't currently available here in the States, and that there are none around.

HOWEVER!

He said they would build me one for about $100 bucks above the listed price.

I spoke with my father-in-law and told him the price (excuse me, but I forgot the exact figure) and he said to go ahead with it as it was still LESS THAN HALF of the price of the same scope in Europe.

I had Lance place the order and in LESS THAN ONE WEEK, I had the scope in my hands.

Talk about customer service!

I had them build me a complete custom scope for me in less than a week.

Excellent customer service.

I bought my first leupold, a vx-1, a couple of years ago for my 375h&h and have been anxiously awaiting my chance to test their famed customer service. Unfortunately, the oportunity hasn't come up yet.... Wink
