Not to be short, but if the mag is long engouh, it's a really simple job. I woudl expect to pay/charge 75 bucks for the SIMPLE job. But, in all honesty, you are only going to gain 150 fps max, and the taylor is interesting. Interested in selling the taylor? jeffe

could be- would you want the barrelled action or just the barrell? It is in a pre-64 model 70 short mag action, in the white. Shooots well in a fiberglass stock. lb404

Hey Leonard...I am still looking for a Win 70 short action to build Karen a 7/08 on. I have that great Dakota take off bbl. that needs to be used!

With a belted case and a ribbed barrel it may not be necessary nor desirable to set the barrel back. A carefull crafsman could readily ream your chamber to .416 Rem and not loose the barrel timing. The trick is to maintain the old headspace exactly. This is not very hard with a belted case and the use of dyechem and a good lathe. Unfortunately, the problem I forsee is that depending on the .416 Taylor chamber dimensions ( which I have not bothered to look up), the rechambering to such a similar cartridge as the .416 Rem may result in a slight chamber ring where the old taylor case dimensions were converted to the .416 rem. Carefull polishing usually minimizes this and in my opinion it's more of a cosmetic flaw than anything else. It will not affect your extraction or ejection. However, it may be an unaviodable side-effect unless you spring for a totally new barrel.-Rob

quote:<off topic> I made my wife's 708 off a 36 mexican mauser. Looks great, especially with the knurled cocking piece. That part's just about useless with a wolff spring in it, but still looks nice. Had a couple people ask me to build their kids' rifle off one.. till i told them what it would cost, AND that the mexican mauser is just a tad shorter than that 24 they've got laying around. jeffe

LB404, I don't think it will be a problem, but I would take a chamber cast first and get all the ducks lined up..the magazine will need to be opened or replaced..

RAy, Actually I was going to pull the barrel and replace the3 short mag action with a long mag action then all will be well. I really hope the chamber will open up to a 416 Rem.Mag. as this is one fine barrel. lb404

lb404, Just wondering, although I may have missed it in an earlier post, are you not planning on having the rear bridge milled? How about replacing/modifing the ejector and bolt stop? I've been thinking of rechambering my Taylor one of these days, but not to the Remington version. It's not that I don't like the Taylor, but the gun was not machined well and needs to be redone anyhow, so I thought I might as well try something new. Good luck!

BW The original rifle was on a pre-64 Model 70 on a short mag. action. By replacing the short magnum action for a long magnum action designed fot the 375 H&H you automatically have adjusted the bolt-stop and the ejection port. The only problem I have ever had with the conversion of the long mag action for use in the 416 Rem. Mag. OR the 404 Jeffery is that the magazine box is a bit tight and you have to play around with feeding.I just wanted to know if the taylor chamber would clean up with a 416 rem mag chamber reamer. I think the barrel will index and head space without any other modifications, but I wanted to hear from a good gunsmith if it was possible! lb404

According to the specs and my mics the 416 Rem should clean up a 338 Chamber with settting the barrel back a turn, but I would chamber cast the 338 before trying..It's never a bad idea to set back a thread unless your dealing with ribs etc...then I would try not too....
