Has it been announced what bore diameter they are going to use? I have read that bore diameters have run from .406-.411. I am hoping they will be lazy and just use their .405 Winchester barrel blanks which are .411.

I think you can count on a .411 bore on the No1 rifles, both 405 Win, and the 450/400 Jef

Hornady's ammo may be .109, or .410, however, to satisfy liability, incase some one shoots their ammo in a .408 bore rifle. Still the bullets will shoot alright in the .411 bore rifles. Hand loaders will use loads with the .411 bullets in the No1!

Thanks for the reply...I am hoping it will be a .411 and if it is I will buy one. I've got a stainless .405 with a 1.5-6 Tasco Titan on top and it was such a nice scope for the money I bought a second one as they have been discontinued...I think a nice blue .450/.400 would go well with the other scope...

Not sure if I will ever hunt anything big enough to justify the gun but it will be a "fun" shooter anyway...

RIP,

Continuing our discussion re 450-400 NE:

It was my understanding that the 450-400 being considered for the Ruger #1 is the 3" version. Correct or no?

Also, if Hornady loads factory ammo for this cartridge, surely they will be in the pressure range suitable for doubles, and whatever other oldies are out there? I figured it would be safe to hand load hotter for the No.1, but I can't see them putting hot factory stuff on the shelf.

I'm curious what the proper PSI would be for the doubles, old or new, in 450-400 NE 3"?

I also wonder what the rim size is?

Kabluewy,
Yassuh! That Ruger No.1 in 450/400 NE 3-inch will be a sweetie.

The double rifle loads with slow powder like H4831, IMR-4831, and RL-22, will be about 2150 fps in a 24" barrel and have pressures right around 35,000 psi.

I imagine that the old Cordite and RL-15 with filler loads would yield the same velocity (or less) with about 40,000 psi (or less).

In the Ruger No.1 you ought to be able to jack the pressures up to 50,000 psi safely with RL-15, Varget or H4350 Extreme and make the cartridge shoot like a traditional .416 Rigby load, IMHO: 400 grainers at 2350 to 2400 fps.

However that would spoil the extended-pinky-finger charm of the little sweetie. Wink It could be especially troublesome if such a load ended up in an antique double rifle.

Rim size is 0.625" diameter and 0.065" thick, for the 450/400 NE 3-inch case, more stoutly constructed, aye.

The 450/400 3-1/4" has a thinner rim: 0.042" thick and 0.624" diameter.

The 3-incher is better. Proberly (Balla Balla lingo) no real need for filler with any loads used in the 3-incher. Isn't that what Yoda Ray used to say about his Sweet Thang Light Sabre before he went over to The Dark Side?
