Does anyone know how well the Remington 405 SP and/or 300 grain HP work on hogs and deer from a hot 45-70? These bullets seem to be about half the price of all the others. I would cast my own but don't have the equipment.

Sean,

I cannot tell you about the 300 HP, but when I owned a 458 Win Mag I used the Remington 405 grain flat points to great effect on deer. My load was right at 2250 fps. They expanded very well and left LARGE exit holes. I would warn you that if you want to have meat to eat shoot the deer through the ribs on a broadside hit or in the head.

Help that helps.

Both off them are excellent bullets especially the 405 grain bullet. The 405 grain is one of the best bullets made IMO.The 405's are accurate, penetrate well, modest expansion and high weight retintion. The 300's are also good as long as the velocity is kept below 2100 fps.Above 2100 fps the bullets begin to lose their jackets but will still kill deer reliably.I have killed several deer with both bullets and have always had great performance. Also the 405 works excellent on hogs too.

At 1800 fps, I find the 405 grain bullet devastating in its expansion and tissue destruction. Probably that is because it is designed soft to expand at factory Springfield velocities (1300 fps). But I like it.
