I'm still trying to sort out my rear sight ( back up to my primary scope ) on my .375 H&H Mag Win. M70. Looking in the Brownells catolog I thought I wanted the NECG Peep sight that fastens to Weaver bases, then I thought I wanted the XS sight systems Ghost ring that fastens to weaver bases. Now I'm looking at the Rem 700 Backup sight on the same page in Brownells, I think XS makes it and it is integral to a weaver style base but am wondering why it is for Rem. only and by the looks of it I don't know why it can't be made to fit a Win or is it also made for my Winchester? Anyone have an answer to this? The other choices I mentioned are fine choices but the one for the Remington is right there all the time and no chance of me losing it. When I get this sorted out I think I'm sending the whole thing out to get Cerama-koted or something including 2 sets of detachable rings. Thanks in advance guys.

The Mod. 70 I had: I used the XS High Weaver sight, on a Leupold QRW base. It was almost nuts on right out of the box. A good system. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. I tried the Weaver XS and couldn't get it to mount properly due to interference with the reciever. But I just looked and the one I was shipped was the low version. I'm using the NECG Weaver peep on my 375 H&H M70. The azimuth adjustment is a little hoaky (SP) but the peep works for me. I like it a whole lot better than the express sight as I'm "a bit older" and can't see the rear sight if I'm focused in the target. The peep arrangment solves that and I feel it's quicker also. Another plus for the NECG as once it's adjusted you don't need any tools to put it on or take it off. Also you can change aperture sizes without having to re-zero the rifle. But like you said it is "losable" DRSS member Constant change is here to stay.

I went to the XS web site and just the same ones as shown in Brownells are offered on the site. I posed the question to them about the Rem rear apeture that I was asking about to see if they had one for a Win. Will was right about the site address www.xssights.com

I see XS now has ghost ring sights to fit the Mod. 70, so can dispense with the Weaver base type. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. It would cost you, but one solution is to have some one make you a Weaver base that is extended to the rear a little and make it with an integral peep sight that will just fit under your scope. Or even better yet, have them make the base extend to the rear and dovetail it for a hand made peep that will just fit under the scope. This will give you windage adjustment in rear sight. THis definitely won't be the cheapest solution, but it is a very good way to fix your problem. Just something to consider

On my M70 in .375 H&H, I had a Lyman Alaskan mounted in a Paul Jaeger sidemount, and a Lyman 57 base mounted so I could remove the scope fast and slip the pre-zeroed sight standard into the #57 base. It worked well. I aso had a Redfield base-mounted peep on a Remington once, but it required me to put a much higher front sight on the rifle due to the fact that the peep looked over the scope mount base..... I believe a QD sidemount base of some kind, such as a Griffin & Howe or Jaeger, is the best for use with a low peep line of sight. You can make the LOS of the scope and the irons the same height this way..... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

ED- How do you like the G&H mount? How repeatable is the zero after taking it off and replacing it? I am thinking of putting one on a rfile in the near future. THanks!

I have used g&h sidemounts for years on my pre64 mod 70's in 458, 375, 300H&H and my sporterized 1093 springfield and have never had any trouble, repeatability is spot on and I can carry the rifle like you would the old 1917ai bar

The sporterized rifle is a 1903 springfield, not a 1093 and the bar is a 1917a1

I have a second model Mod70 in 270 That came with a Lyman WJS reciever sight. At some time in it's life it had a side mont scope as the two holes drilled for the base are filled with plug screws. It cutrrently has a Leupold M8 6x on it in a Leupold bridge mount. This base uses only the front hole in the rear bridge allowing the Lyman to remain on the gun with the Disc removed. Has a High Marble Sheared front sight. The sliding indicator is set on the Lyman and if you remove scope just rack the Lyman up to proper number and shoot. Accurate handy and has been set up this way for a long time. SCI Life Member NRA Patron Life Member DRSS
