i was looking at their website, and their prices certainly look reasonable. Does anyone know the basis of their actions, particularly the basic boxlock? I would have to guess they don't manufacture three or four unique actions at this price. The boxlock looks strangely familiar, but I can't place it.

I cannot speak for all of the rifles that they may make, but the Searcy field grade doubles use an Anson & Deeley boxlock design. The A&D design is a 100 year old critter proven to be reliable and durable. The actions are made right there in Mr. Searcy's shop on modern CNC machines with final hand fitting. The actions start out as top grade blocks of stainless steel and wind up being a wonderful product.

Butch Searcy's rifles are $16K rifles for under $10K, built to your measurememnts, and backed by Butch himself! Johan Calitz uses his rifles exculsively! [Cool]

I'm on the prowl for a double. In my journey I'm finding out how fascinating and complex doubles are. Is a third fastner important in a double rifle design to you? Do Searcy Doubles have a third fastner?

The Searcy rifles do not have the third fastener, but they have not prestented any problem because of that fact! Butches actions are made from extremely strong Stainless steel, and follow the A&D patern. The chamber walls are subtantual, and the barr is long, and thick. Imo, these rifles are as strong as any double rifle on the market today! The third fastener is not as much of a benifite as some folks think, especially if the action is built as massive as the Searcy. The reason all the German rifles have Greener cross bolt third fasteners is, the Germans like the actions very slinder, but still I don't think they are absolutely necessary. I have doubles with, and with out, and I have experienced zero problem with any of them, after useing both for over 40 years! If I wanted a new 500 NE double rifl it would be a B. Searcy, hands down! One thing about Searcy rifle is, you know where the maker is, and he is always available. That can't be said of most makers today, and you can talk dirrectly to Butch, not some bean counter! [Cool]

My 470 will be in my hands next week and I'm about like a kid at Christmas. I had the same questions you have and can tell you that Butch does not use the third fastener due to the fact, as already stated, they are heavier and stronger and have more metal in critical areas of the action. You need to remember that when a double fires, it tries to pull the two halves, so to speak, apart. Butch builds his guns heavier to resist this natural force and to prevent or resist the twisting they experience when each barrel is fired.

One thing that sold me is you can call and talk to Butch, only with rare exceptions i.e. he is in the middle of some very intricate work, this is an incredible plus to me. Call him and ask to speak to him and ask him these questions. I promise you he will welcome the fact you ask. He wants you to know about how his guns are build and will take the time to explain it. The money you spend on that phone call will be some of the best you have ever spent. I bet you may come away wanting a Searcy Double. [Smile]

Mac,
The Searcy has a third fastner just like the Jefferys, The dolls head is a third fastner for all practical purposes I would say as it serves the same prupose as a cross bolt.
