My FFL dealer tells me that CZ requires a multiple purchase to get CZ550 Safari Classics (.404 Jeffery, .450 Rigby, or .505 Gibbs) and is willing to take a single-digit percentage markup if he can get enough people to do a group buy (he thinks a minimum of four people might swing the deal, but to be safe I'd try for more than that).

So how many S.F. Bay Area AR members are out there who are interested in getting one of these rifles with this kind of offer? Please contact me by PM. Thanks!

FWIW I ordered one in 404 Jeffery. When it arrived I found it to be a piece of junk. Poor fit and finish, the saftery required a hammer to move it, finish on barrel had pebbley texture, and barrel had a 6 inch long scratch. CZ's reponse was - they would not redo the rifle or provide another one, because the damand was so high.

I have 4 other CZs and they are fine (in smaller calibers). I wish you luck, but I think they are swamped with demand and content to shove poorer quality rifles out the door.

I also noted the instruction manual they gave was for a 375 with no mention of any of the 3 new calibers on the manual (404 416 & 458) so perhaps they are really behind the curve and ran out or have not made manuals for the new rifles.

Off topic a bit (although I'm interested in CZ big bores too). I may move to the bay area, perhaps San Fran. What are the gun laws there? I heard they are considering a handgun ban. Is this in effect? What about long guns? Wheree can I go to get info on the gun laws.
Thanks

Slingster,

I hate to be "piling on", but my experience was much like 404Jeffrey's [see my previous Post

A better idea might be to buy the barreled action and get your own stock.
The wood on the one they sent me and all those that I saw at SHOT Show this year were poorly done "by the computer". Not worth anywhere near the $1200-$1400 premium over the standard 550 models. [I'm still not sure what that premium is for as they will only take off about $200 if you ask for the barreled action only!]

As I recall there was only about a 10% mark up built into their pricing - but actually for the FFL 10% of $2200 may not be too bad!

I tried to put together a group buy of these guns at the time they were launched. Spoke with Alice, the Pres of CZ at the time. CZ was offering these rifles direct to the customer on a special order basis, and the "dealer discount" on these was a few percent. Not enough to make it worthwhile. On the regular guns, I found I could get a better price from one of the big wholesalers than direct from CZ under their dealer program. Then I heard the new rifles weren't that great. So I canned the whole idea. Now that the guns have been available for some time, and perhaps not selling as well, CZ may be offering a better discount to dealers. The proof will be in the pudding!

Update:

The American Safari Magnums can also be part of the group buy. They come in .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, .458 WM, and .458 Lott and in three stock options: field grade, fancy grade, and laminated. Send me a PM if interested.

I'm forced to cancel this group buy because of an unannounced change in CZ policy on these rifles. It used to be a dealer direct purchase with a minimum order, but CZ has apparently changed it to a special order through their distributors. Thus there's no benefit to a group buy. Sorry about that.
