How is the 375 Ruger going in America.

On a large Australian forum the 375 Ruger appears to be coming up in front of the H&H for new rifle sales. I think Howa is introducing a 20 inch barrel job.

Mike!
Is that you? "Mister Weatherby Power" himself?
Did you un-ban yourself?
Good to see you back.

It seems the .375 Ruger is going gangbusters everywhere that DG hunting is concerned:
Oz
Africa
Alaska

Not much need for it in the deer woods at home, but that never stopped any of us from buying one to use for varmints or whatever.

Any rifle loony ought to have at least one .375 Ruger ... just like we used to think about the .375 H&H. Wink

Don't be a stranger!

Ron,

My guess is in Australia the Ruger package Vs CZ package is a major reason.

Beats ne though why Ruger/Hornady did not do 300 and 338 on that 375 case instead of those annoying RCMs Big Grin

I think he is in ban or suspend mode.

He has been playing with a 22/06 which so far has gone great. Using heavy bullets fast twist.

When he first had it done with a JGS reamer he got some CH dies to give it a try but they were bad news. Then he got Redding to do dies, took about 3 months as I remember from order time to Australia.

The PH he has been using in Africa rfecently came to Australia and Blair introduced him to "multi killing" and they among other things used the 22/06 and Blairs 22/243. The PH fell in love with the 22/06. Rem 700, Jewell trigger and Nightforce.

I got a 375 Ruger not too long ago, a LH SS. And I love it, when my buddy and I were sighting it in he liked it so much he went and priced out a RH model for himself.

Good Hunting,

Watching the blokes on the Australian forum that have bought or buying 375 Rugers, I think it is stealing a lot of 338 Winchester business. In other words if there was no 375 Ruger they would have bought a 338 and not a CZ 375. Not all of then but a lot of 'em.

Mike,
Whilst I think the Ruger package in 375Ruger is doing well ... I seriously reckon the Remington SPS package in 375H&H is doing better. Yet to see a Ruger here, but know of x3 SPS's getting about. $1220 out the door compared to $1500+ ... the Ruger package isn't quite right ... place it in the regular synthetic stock as a 20" and 23" model and I think it'd sell even better ... but its still $300 more expensive. The Ruger I reckon has killed the CZ in its tracks.
Cheers...

Always believed the hunting world could do with an commercially available .375 Taylor,
finally the .375Ruger- even one step better- thumb 375Ruger dimensions.
Though personally, I would have put the shoulder at 2.100" with an .380" neck length....and even maybe an .500" shoulder.

I have no sentimental attachment to the .375H&H.

Con,

I think you are right.

To my mind the average Australia prefers the rifle with Made in America written on the box if price etc is OK.

For example, in times past when the smaller calibre Rugers were in the general price range of Howas the Ruger was the number 1 seller.

Mike,
The CZ is still too heavy and clunky long for a 375H&H, so a Sambar hunter locally for instance would grab a RemSPS in 375H&H rather than carry a CZ. In the larger calibres(458Lott/416Rigby) where enthusiasts operate I suppose CZ may still be selling some rifles. Imagine the hoopla if Ruger did a 458AccRel!

You make an interesting point regarding the 338WinMag ... the two 375cals are probably outselling it now with ease.

Con,

I reckon most 375s are bought with other things in mind than Sambar deer and buffalo.

Two bits of evidence. Look at all thr Bullet Factory's bullet range, his 375s number the same as his 308s.

Seconsd bit and same idea. Go to Herrons after a shipment of Hornadys arrive and see the boxes of 220 grain flat noses and ditton for the 225 grain Spire points. There is no way all those bullets are going in 375 Big Bores or 375/06s, we both which 375 bore is sucking them up Big Grin

Actually you need to add a 375 AccRel to your safe. Is the case cpacity about like 300 Wby or a bit bigger. I assume like 300 Wby as I think you posted your 458 AccRel would equal or exceed the 450 Ackley.

Mike,
I think in Victoria for certain, 375's are bought with Sambar in mind, especially lightweight ones! Perhaps this is also now occuring in NSW as Sambar continue the colonisation of new country?

One thing I've now seen a few times in the gunshops locally, is the hunter that walks in for factory ammunition in 338WinMag that complains bitterly about loosing a deer because the projectile zipped through ... these guys have been using 250gr factory and invariably walk out with 210gr PowerPoints (or something similar). They seem to come back and buy more too! There seems to be a real push for lightweight pills in the big bores as well ... S&F for example is running 400gr in his 458AccRel, 340s in his 416Taylor and 250s in the 375H&H. Paz is similar, I'm the only one shooting 500gr Woodleighs in the AccRel and 310gr Woodleighs in the 350RemMag. Big Grin I know of other hunters doing similar ... selecting a 375cal or larger than deliberately picking lighter weight pills in an effort to flatten trajectory and perhaps reduce recoil. It's only the small-bore freaks picking heavy pills now. clap As you said to me many moons ago ... once you hit 375cal and up ... bullet performance on soft game is good no matter what. animal
Cheers...

Con,

Back in the 70s when I had my first 460 I shooting roos with 500 grain Hornadys with 115 grains of 4350 which was right on 2500. Also 350 Hornadys with 4046 which was at 3000 and 400 grain Speers loaded to about 2200 f/s

It was the 500 grain Hornadys that made the roos look like they had been bombed.

Same deal with pigs. The 500 were devastating on pigs with up the arse shots.

But in the 90s the 500 grain Hornadys did not do so much. That was with the 460 that Woods bought. maybe the bullets were harder.

It would be good though if The Bullet Factory made 45s that were 400 grains and above.

Mike,
The BulletFactory web-site isn't totally up to date. Jason indeed makes a 405gr projectile in a spitzer style where the entire first third is exposed lead. Guaranteed to go 'splat'.

In some ways I wonder why the 375Ruger and indeed the latest 416Ruger dont come with two factory loads. An African load (FMJ and soft) at full weight, and a 'light game' load for what is realistically most likely to be chased in NorthAmerica/Europe and the South Pacific. In factory loads we seem to be dominated by African dreams.
Cheers...

I can't seem to get excited about the Ruger 375, but the 416 Ruger Alaskan kind of interest me. A couple of my buddies here in AK love theirs and have taken nice bears with them. However, I don't ever see a Ruger usurping any time afield from any of my Sakos . Lou
