M-70 375 Ejection Problem?
Test drove my new M 70 375 H&H stainless classic today...real accurate and the recoil seems fine. More horsepower backwards but not as sharp as my Ruger 300 win. mag. My question is whether the failure of the gun to eject the last spent cartridge means I have a problem. If so, what is the fix? When I load 3 in the magazine the first 2 cases are ejected without a problem.

Thanks,

Marc

can you desribe the problem?
case falls back into the mag?
case goes all the way back, bounces, and falls back in?
case doesn't leave the chamber?

case comes back just a little and falls off the extractor?

I think the case comes back a little bit, but just sits in the magazine.

Don't mean to be a smart a$$. I assume you are working the bolt briskly so that the case hits the ejector with enough force to eject it. Or is the case actually being dropped by the extractor?

As usual just my $.02

Iv had some of my model 70s do that if I did not work the bolt briskly. every time its done it I was at the range shooting from a bench rest.

Couldn't wait until next weekend, so I cycled 3 rounds, a couple of times. Invariably the first two rounds ejected perfectly, but the 3rd was either not picked up, or if it was, the round was ejected feebly, resulting in it falling back into the magazine.

"not picked up" ??

you mean it was left in the chamber or didn't make it out?

try this.. put ONE empty brass in the chamber,
open the floorplate, leave it open

now work the bolt?

does it make it out, or fall through the mag?

Tried what you suggested. It doesn't make it out of the chamber.

Just a guess here, from playing with my M70 and I could be way off base.

Your extractor may not be tensioned (shaped) correctly, when there are other cartridges in the magazine the upward pressure of the magazine spring holds the rounds under the extractor but when the magazine's empty there's not enough spring force under the case.

A gunsmith can tune your cast extractor or you can buy a new machined one from Matt Williams.

Just an update, in case anyone else is going through this process. Spoke to Jim Wisner and he doesn't make stainless extractors. Jim referred me to Williams who does. I order one from Williams, but subsequently discover I already have a Williams extractor on my m 70 stainless classic. (No harm my stainless 300 wsm can use the upgrade)

In any event it appears that the extractor had a deflection in the middle causing a lack of tension on the bolt, resulting in the extractor's failure to pick up the case on a regular and consistent basis.

So in an attempt to rectify the situation I removed the extractor and straighten out the deflection and now observe considerably more tension on the bolt. The result...partial success. Cases now get ejected without a hiccup. The problem now is that it is difficult, (not always) to get the second round into the chamber. Looks like it goes in at an angle and gets hung up on something. When I back off slightly with the forward pressure of closing the bolt the cartridge realigns itself and i can close the bolt.

Any thoughts on whats going on? I intend to have this all professionally looked at, but giving up my rifle for several weeks while the 416 is in the shop will make make me feel naked. Thanks.

Thanks Blackbearhunter.

I'm going to bite the bullet and drop it by the local Winchester warranty station today. I still have a couple of other guns to play around with.

Marc,

Have you looked at the William's web-page? He has detailed instructions on how to flex his extractor to adjust for proper tension. For that matter, you could just swap out the old one for the new one you ordered and it should work. You can hold the bolt in your hand and slip a cartridge under the extractor claw and tell if it is too loose or too tight.

Gary,

Thanks for the info. I lucked out and did it the way the website suggested. Thanks again. I'm looking forward to playing with the rifle again this weekend.
