Hey wanna577 and GeorgeS,

Thanks George. Obviously, I didn't know how to post my pictures.

Wanna577,

I asked my gunsmith to make this rifle not too long after 9/11. I wanted a real thumper that was all American. (That's a Winchester P-14) I figured that the .405, with a good bullet - in a strong action could take anything in the world. So, I guess that the reason was that I needed to make a personal statement about what American ingenuity could produce. I'm not a politician or a flag waiver but 9/11 really pissed me off. There aren't many ways to legally make personal statements that anyone cares to consider. I made mine with what America produced 100 years ago and is still as leathal as anything made by any other country - even today. There are many more powerful cartriges but once you reach the point of being able to humainly dispact anything that walks the question of leathality becomes moot.

I don't mean to sound all melodarmatic but you asked.

Good Shooting,

Smoker

What a beautiful rifle! I'd expect that with the length of the P-14 action, it's strength and if the chamber is somewhat long throated, there is no reason that you couldn't duplicate the .450/400 with pressures well handled by a bolt gun.

I just bought a Remington Model 30 (same action as your rifle) for a whopping $231. You have given me great ideas of what I should do with it!

As to your "American" choice of calibers, I, likewise, got p.o'ed when the Chinese seized the P-3 that suffered a mid-air. I had ordered a gunsafe which was made in PRC. I called the seller and told him to cancel the order (luckily before shipment),, and paid a few bucks more for one made in good old Tennessee.

Semper Fi!

Sounds like one of the best reasons I've ever heard for building a particular rifle. My hats off to you. Hope my Model 30's look half that nice someday.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for posts. I hope this rifle shoots as good as it looks. Bill and Chad made a 35 Whelen for me a few years ago and man can that thing shoot. It can keep three 280 gr. Swift A-Frames under an inch as long as I do my part.

My problem is finding some really good load data. Most of what I've read is designed for the 95 action. I guess that a little time at the relaoding bench will solve that problem. I really want about 2,400 fps. with the 360 gr. NF.

I am hoping that with the number of powders that are out there and the strength of the P-14 action I won't have to play around too much. Working up slowly with a slug that heavy can get be punishing for my old bones. Bill and Chad selected a stock design that, in 35 Whelen, proved to send all the recoil straight back. Makes that 280 gr. A-Frame, at 2,457 fps feel like a 180 gr. from an 06. The .405 is a little heavier, so I'm hoping to escape with only slight contusions. Seriously, I am sure it will be great fun putting that old round through its paces.

Well, thanks agin for the posts guys. I'll post any data I that I'm able to gather. I have a slightly shot-up Chrony beta master somewhere, so I should have some data in a couple weeks.

Good Shooting,

Smoker

Smoker, great rifle and an even better reason! Can you give some details on the build? How much reworking of the action, feed rails, mag box, etc. was required? Looking forward to hearing more on this rifle.

Smoker*,

Let me know what COL you are going to use and the length of those 360 gr Northfolks. I can give you some load data which should be fairly accurate. I believe your barrel is 27" long too if memory serves (will check you first post too). I have a well correlated model to work with anyway.

I can get 2200 fps safetly with a 365 gr modified Woodleigh in my M1895 with it's 24" barrel. Pressure is right around 62,500 psi, using IMR3031 (maximum load I would say).

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments! I don't know what all work had to be done to the action. I know that Bill machined off the ears and did a little work on the mag box. I told him I wanted to keep the bolt and the safety. The action is piller and glass bedded. Everything else he did is a mystery. Bill and Chad make a lot of the guns for the 1,000 yard range at Williamsport, PA so, knowing their reputation, I told them to do what had to be done to make a very accurate rifle.

The barrel is a #5 contour, 28" Shilen with a barrel band front sight, barrel band sling swivel and I believe a Lyman or Williams peep sight. The barrel is bead blasted with a matte finish.

The stock is Claro walnut in a modified Oberndorf style with a schnable. The cheek piece is outlined. The recoil pad seems to be quite substantial. I don't know who makes it.

I have some 4320 - which I haven't been able to get any data on. 4320 seems to fall into that burning range that would work very well with the 360 gr. North Fork. I will check with Bill and Chad and see what they have to say. I also have some Varget. I will use 55 or so grs. to start and keep stuffing until it won't take anymore. I doubt that I will run into pressure problems before I run out of space.

Ass_Clown - I will be interested in seeing your data. I believe that the North Fork will offer considerably less resistance and perhaps, a bit more velocity because of its groved structure.

Now it's all over but the shooting. I have to find the time to load some shells and dig out my shot-up Chrony Beta Master. I have been doing some substitute teaching in the local schools so my time is extremely limited.

As soon as I get more data I will let everyone know.

Thanks again, for all the positive comments.

Good Shooting,

Smoker
