I'm rather smitten with the need to have a .375 H&H in a Mannlicher configuration and it seems that Cooper makes this exact version.

I just love those short barrels and full stocks.

Other than old politics, does anyone have anything bad they can say about Cooper Rifles?

Regards,

Robert

Rob, just don't be too enamored of the test targets they include with their rifles...they're not 100 yards groups. But I've heard good things about their accuracy anyway. All the "special" Coopers I've seen, like full stocks, etc, have been priced 2-3 times what a standard Cooper sporter costs.

Biebs, that's interesting on the targets. Any idea what they are testing at?

Their rifles chambered in smaller cartridges are test-fired indoors at 50yds. or so with a Leupold 36x benchrest scope.

Yes, I've heard both 30 and 40 yards as well.

I would look for an older Sako 375 Mannlicher style for about $1200. They show up on Gun Broker fairly frequently. Much less expensive than the Cooper.

Research Dan Cooper first before buying new.

iirc, Dan "sold" the company to some senior employees, and is carrying the note himself.
Any purchase still feeds his bank account.

My opinion; he is still involved, just standing in the shadows...

I'd have a true custom built on a Mauser action with wow(!!) wood for a little more. Or, an OM 70 for a bit more than that.

I bought an OM70 from Jim Kobe in January, and had him fit my 450/375RUM barrel to it. Ask Jim what he may have in stock for actions.

There is a complete VZ24 for sale in the classifieds. Make a great 375. I have a 404Jefferys built on one.

I have no ties to Cooper other than the two rifles that I own. All of their barrels have been made by Wilson, "to Cooper specs." When Dan was ousted for his mis-advised donation to Obama, the Company was eventually wholly purchased by Wilson barrels.
They have a 50 yard underground range (which I have never seen) where all firearms are fired with a 36X Leupold mounted aboard. I guess some do go back if they don't meet specs. My only gripe would be that the only ammo used for the 22 LR is the very expensive Lapua match. I believe they use a Bentz spec'ed reamer for the chamber and suggest only subsonic match, even in their sporters.
I have a 223 Varmint that I can almost match the target supplied with the gun when new. My 22 is a basic model that I have yet to put through the ringer due to the rimfire supply shortage. Also, have had other things on my plate.

A NIB Sako Mannlicher 375 just popped up on Guns International. Pricey but a lot less than a Cooper.

I have owned a Sako with a Mannlicher stock. I had to sell it, but I still cry. Jump on that puppy; and get a peep sight. That is an awesome combination.

Test range is not " underground". Test targets are now shot at 50 yds in their new factory. I've visited both the old and and new.
Anyway, they guarantee 1/2 inch at 100 yd or they will fix it, what more do you want.
Dan Cooper screwed the pooch and has been gone since 2009.
Great small semi-custom all american gun making company in Stevensville MT.
Just my .02
