Anyone have barrel profile dimensions off of a Rigby mauser?

Specifically, i'm looking to replicate the "Stepped" look of the pre-war guns in the .375 & .404 range range of calibers.

thanks.

Lothar Walther has two such patterns that are produced...The Holland and Holland pattern (my all time favorite) and the original Mauser pattern...

Woody used my old Holland and Holland to copy the pattern for me, then decided it was a great pattern and now they produce barrels in that pattern. I has a step downT for the quarter rib to begin at...The Mauser has the step down and a level area to slide the barrel band rear sight on...Pretty neat stuff.

Alf,
The last pic you posted is the SigArms Mauser 98 Magnum, the 1998 commemorative in .416 Rigby, eh? It shows the rear sight is on a sleeve that fits up against a small step on the barrel, ahead of the radiused taper from the shank cylindrical chamber section.

My .450 Dakota has the exact same barrel contours and sight monting method, no surprise. The surprise is that there is no barrel mounted secondary recoil lug on my M98 Magnum. bewildered Built like a Dakota 76 African in this regard. It has a good glass bedding job from the factory, and two crossbolts.

I am more into function than form in all these matters, but I do think the SigArms M98 Magnums could have been a bit heavier toward the muzzle in .450 Dakota.

If your .416 Rigby has the same contour as my .450 Dakota, yours would be a bit heavier and better balanced. Mine is muzzle light with a muzzle diameter of 0.666" exclusive of the barrel band of course. Too light! I think this would be just right for .416.

Lothar Walther lists an "Original H&H" pattern... any idea what that one looks like?

Thanks for the effort of posting all these, Alf. clap
I also wish to look this gift horse in the mouth, and see if any muzzle diameters are available for some of the old originals by the English and Germans.

In general, most of the barrels are pretty light at the muzzle, of the ones where the muzzles are visible.

The Rigby 1924 No. 5 Pattern in .416 Rigby looks very heavy, from what can be seen, and the catalog says it was a 26" barrel, 10 pound rifle weight.

Very interesting and informative, thanks again. thumb

Some of you fellows interested in this sort of stuff should consider joining The Austalian Big Game Rifle Club.

NitroExpress.com have several members and it is full of blokes with original English guns and lots of knowledge.

Naturally a member with a Wby or Browning A Bolt is immmediately expelled. Big Grin

I have no idea wheter any of these blokes have the knowledge of Alf but it is another resource.
