What do you guys think about this new offering from Ruger. SS, laminated stock, ... pretty. Out of the question, as a single shot?

Nick,

What's the question? As a DGR, with a PH, I mean why not? With practice and a butt cuff a Ruger 1 can be reloaded pretty fast. Whether it is "fast enough" adds to the pucker factor, I suppose.

As a play toy however,it is a pretty cheap entry into a big bore. Buy it, scope it (or not), go shooting.

Not much that needs to be fiddled with. No bedding issues, no feeding from the mag issues. Safety cannot be changed, so no 3 position, should I or should'nt I, issues. The rings that come with the Ruger work fine, so no hunting for the appropriate ring and base combo, that will stand up to DGR recoil.

Hell, I've just taken away all the fun from owning a bolt actioned DGR.

Anyway, I got one recently in 405 Win. It's fun to play with, and although I have better calibers to play "great white hunter" with, it is a hoot to carry out in the field. Even if it's just for bambi.

I also had Ruger one's in 375 H&H, 458 Win (rechamber into 458 Lott years ago), and 45-70.

They're great. But you cannot eat just one.

Have fun,

Bob

I have one it shoots nice right out of the box. I bought it as a backup rifle for my DG hunt. I never used it, but for baboons. I have tried to unload it but short of giving it away looks like Ill have it a while.
If you ever want to shoot one and are up my way Nick Give a yell I got rounds left over waiting for someone to shoot them up.

Nick,
I like it. Should be hell for stout and a good mudder. My first "big bore" was the .458 WinMag Ruger No.1 back in 1985, so getting one of the stainless/laminate .458 Lotts was like coming home to a shiny new "double-wide" pre-fab. [Wink]

I use a Leupold 2.5X standard rifle scope or Burris 2.75X IER scout scope on these big bore No.1's with the tiny ring spacing on the quarter ribs.

I shove the scopes as far forward as possible so as not to hang over the loading port too far back.
Then I put a Pachmayr slip on recoil pad over the factory pad and then the gun suits me just fine.

I get by pretty well with the matte black Burris scout scope on a .416 Rigby No.1 in blue and walnut. On one shooting expedition I shot a water buffalo in the lungs at 150 yards then in the neck at 50 yards as a finisher; also a fallow deer at 342 yards--one shot dropped it with the 350 grain X bullet at 2700 fps.

Shadow - I like the look of it and the handling must be great. Tang Safety - YES! They list it at 10lbs. though .. heavy. I would use it for "DG" without a second thought. Strong and reliable. Trim and nice looking, I think.

700 - I'd try that same scope, I think.

Tonto - "Now, where did that masked man go?" Oh ... sorry ... You have the SS / Laminate? You are selling it? Send email.

RIP - I'm pleasantly surprised you own and like them. Don't recall your mentioning this. Good points, as usual. Thank You.

It doesnt feel heavy to carry maybe because it seems short. It is a very sharp looking weapon. The stainless part is a big benifit. They recoil a bit but my trigger was such that I still didnt jerk the shot. I almost used it for my elephant but the win mag performed so great on the buffalo I decided to try and use it for everything. I sent you an email.

Does it also come in .416 Rigby the stainless laminate model ??

Is there any special method of lubrication for the stainless Ruger #1's that needs to be followed ??

Dean,

All my 1H's, 1A's and 1S's came with Ruger rings. Might just be my gunshop throws em in, as I've done business with them for 20 years or so. I'm one of their best customers, and my wife will verify it, to her regret.

Nick,

Tonto's right, in that they carry a lot easier than they weigh on a scale. I think because so much weight is in the barrel, rather than the action, like on a bolt action. Also they carry in the hand like an old Winny 94, and go to point like a good shotgun.

I've put Leupold III 1.5x5's or II 1.5x4's on all mine.

Alot not to like.

Bob

PC,
The 2003 Ruger catalog shows that the K1-H-BBZ is offered in stainless&laminate for the following, all with 24" barrel, barrel-band sling base and front sight:

.375 H&H
.405 Win.
.416 Rigby
.458 Lott

Other calibers are offerred in the Ruger No.1 stainless&laminate under different model designations and configurations, from .22-250 to .45-70 Gov't.

Now if they would only offer the 404 Jeffery in the No.1 and the M77MkII RSM, I might overlook the freaky recoil plate on the Magnum bolt action for the gentle giant 404J.

And let us not forget the excellent little NECG peep sight that goes on the Ruger No.1 quarter rib rear integral scope base. It is sweet and will lighten and stream line a big bore Ruger No.1. The open sight on the quarter rib folds down out of the way, pretty as you please.

You can go into the field with a rifle that only weighs about 9 pounds (with peep and no scope), and is as short as a bolt action with a 20" barrel. The fat Ruger barrel works well on the Ruger No.1 with its short (24"-barreled) overall length of 40-1/4" out of the box.

RIP,

yes a .404J would be really nice, but that could not be in a stainless laminate it would have to be blued and wood. But the Rigby with it's ultra modern case design fits quite nicely into the stainless laminate dressing [Wink] !!

For a simple no frills rugged big banger like the Ruger #1 I would opt for the 2.5x compact leupold, it would like nice and neat on the #1 and would suit the distances of the .458 Lott at any rate. There also a tough little scope.

There a lot cheaper at the moment due to the weakened greenback, payed $1500 for mine in stainless in 375 H&H, $50 cheaper in blue/walnut, will be here in three weeks, was the same price in any calibre. Another guns shop up the road wanted $1900 for the same rifle!

Nick,

I think it is the blued version that is new. My local gunshop has had the stainless for 6 months to a year.

PC,

a 404 would be perfect but I will probably go with the lott blued version.

link to ruger#1 458 lott walnut & blue

regards,

steve
