I've got a client coming for a bear/moose hunt this fall, and he has asked me to purchase a gun that he can use during the hunt. He also want to use the same gun at a later polar bear hunt.

He want to buy the Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless (I think that's the model) in .375 H&H.

He'd like a Leupold Vari X-II 3-9x40 on top, Leupold mounts/rings, and some other non-relevant stuff.

I'm about to go out and order the thing, is there anything I should be aware of? The client is particularly concerned with functioning of the bolt in relation to height of scope mounts. He also wants the scope to be positioned as close to the eye as possible, a little instruction I'm going to ignore for now.

Does anybody make factory ammo with the 270 grs Fail Safe bullet in it, which is what he would like to use? It didn't ring an immediate bell with my gun dealer.

I have had no problems with the bolt throw on mine. As far as function, mine has 11 guide seasons with little to show for wear and tear.

Winchester Supreme comes in the 270 gr. Fail Safe.

Frans, how are you legally going to pull this off?

Legally, eh? Well, it is completely legal for a person without a PAL (visiting hunter) to use the rifle of a person that has (outfitter/guide). I think the one person has to be near the other. Happens all the time. It is also legal to give your rifle in loan to another person with a PAL, provided the registration card goes with it.

One and one makes two. Now the question is, how is the outfitter going to pull this off? He's dropping off the client to his bear stand, and I'm sure he won't be sitting there next to him to hold his hand...

And while I'm at it, said model is not available in stores around here, nor at the importer's. So we'll have to look at alternatives. I've given him four:

Sako 75 stainless for some C$1570
CZ550 for some $1100
Winchester M70 Classic Safari, at about $1300
Remington something stainless, for about $800.

I handled the last one.... ouch, too light for my taste!

It won't be legal! The whole idea makes absolutely no sense, and am pretty much guessing that the Outfitter is looking for a new, "free", rifle.
