Feeding Problem (?)
Took a new rifle to the range, which is CRF. It loaded and cycled fine. I then dropped a round into the chamber and pushed the bolt forward.

The bolt wouldn't close, nor could I extract the round. Ended up using a cleaning rod to pop the round out.

I have often dropped a round into the chamber and ben able to cycle the round- so is this a fluke or an issue or problem with the rifle?

Thanks for any advice.

Sounds about normal for an unmodified CRF action...

Why not load from the mag like the design was intended?

There should be an angled surface at the front of the claw by the face of the bolt. that slanted surface is supposed to slide over the rim or edge of the case when the bolt is closed onto a round already in the chamber. I've had to smooth that surface out on CZ and ruger claws before and when they are smoothed out, the bolt will close and slide the claw over the rim of the cartridge. If there are any scratches or edges on that surface, the rim of the case will catch there instead of letting the claw slide all the way over.

Newsflash-Mauser style CRF actions were never designed for snap-overs. Despite reworking smoothing etc the extractor will eventually break if this is continuely done. DONT DO IT! Load it from the mag as it was designed.IT aint a Remington!-Rob

The Vulcan grip method is not the only one. In fact there is a better one (assuming that you want a full magazine and one up the spout).

With a fully loaded magazine in a CRF rifle, there is still usually plenty of room left in the magazine to depress one additional round about halfway down.

Do that, and then push the bolt forward, while applying light pressure with your thumb on the extra round. As you move the bolt forward, ease up on the thumb pressure and allow the round to slide up and engage the extractor. Pushing the bolt home will then chamber the round.

By doing the above, you will have a full magazine and a round in the chamber - in other words, a fully loaded rifle.

Having said all of that, I should add that nearly all of my CRF bolt actions have beveled extractors, so that the extractor will snap over the base of a single loaded case and engage the extractor groove. Many modern designs come that way from the factory.

I do agree with Rob, however, that snapping the extractor over a push fed case is not necessarily a good thing for the extractor.

Better to use the method described above.

Hi Mike

Thanks very much for the tip. Yes, it is nice to have a full mag and one in the chamber.

With my 425 I can have three in the Mag and by sliding the bolt closed a tad, I then can clip a forth reasonably fast.
