458win mag
I have a few custom ruger no.1's in 448 win mag. I'm looking at a Ruger m77 in 458 win mag for a new project. Any opinions on the M77 in 458wm?

i suggest rebarreling a 7 or 300 mag on a mkII to 458 .. well, accrel, but the winmag fits, too

I briefly owned one, but never hunted it. Not a true CRF, if that makes a difference. Take Jeff's advice and build on a MK II. Better, yet, find yourself a MKII express rifle in 458 Lott. Unlike many, I don't think the Lott is the bee's knee's over the 458 Win, but the Ruger Lott rifles are pretty sweet. If you Handload, you can load down to 458 Mag performance, or load up to slap a snot bubble upside your face.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I've had a tang safety 77 in .458 from 1981 on. Bought it new as my university graduation present to me.
I like the tang safety head and shoulders above the mark II. The safety design is so much better. It has been just fine for every job I have asked it to do. I'm not one who drinks the CRF Koolaid.

Buckeyeshooter,
IMO, and if one hand loads, the 458 is a decent caliber suitable for all DG animals on this planet..

Im one that drinks the Control feed Koolaid! and I like the mod. 70 type safetys, as the grip safety on the 77 belongs on a shotgun..but to each his own and I will defend with my life your right to your opinion.. tu2

your choice is very good for sure.

be sure your stock is bedded.

Allow me to restate --

I like the mkII m77 - and it is an easy rebarrel and standard stock work, on a 7 or 300 mag ..

as *I* have actually rebarreled and even so much as created a custom pattern for the m77 mkII (requires extending the trigger and action screws) and built/barreled/stock several, I can tell you, from experience, that

it will work just fine - look at the hawkeye african for confirmation

Your choice of firearms! Remarkable what Accurate 2230 did for the performance of this cartridge.
Extremely efficient, consistent and inexpensive way to get a 500 gr pill out the barrel @ +2150 FPS. And do it very accurately! Within acceptable pressure limits.
