Hello I am looking for opinions and experience with this rifle and action type. How accurate are they say with a 375 H&H? How dependable are they? Thanks Mark | ||

Mark, do you mean a Steyr Model S or a true bullerknife-bolt Mannlicher Schoenauer? Both will be quite accurate and dependable. A true 375 MS would be worth a bit of money! The few made in 458 are pushing $5K. | |||

Yes, looks like a Model S Some of them had a cut-out in the buttstock when a 2nd magazine was kept handy. Great rifles. | |||

The MS=Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles are first and foremost a Control Round Feed (CRF) action, and the rotary top loaded magazine are the most dependable bolt rifle ever made in my opinion. This rifle is made of steel and wood. The SM=Steyr Mannlicher Is a (PF)push feed action and has a plastic removable rotary magazine. When this rifle runs dry, it is impossible to re-load a couple of rounds from the top, but the magazine must be removed to be re-loaded. Both rifles are very accurate and both are well made, and smooth actions and the barrels are hammer forged rifling and stress relieved to form very accurate internal bore dimensions, hence the rifles are very accurate. In my opinion the MS=Mannlicher Schoenauer is a better choice for any dangerous game hunting, but heavy chamberings in the MS are rare, and are very expensive, since the MS rifles were no longer made after about 1970. This was because of the very complex machining needed to build them was very expensive, and the SM=Mannlicher can be made entirely by CNC machines. That fact is why every push feed rifle, no matter the brand, was made because it took no human skill above programing a CNC machine, not because it made a better rifle. Are you saying CRF rifles can't be made on CNC equipment? Or, that there is some advantage to making them with a file and ax or what? | |||

To me the only downside is the magazines and the botoom metal are made out of some weird plastic and they often break. A buddy of mine has one in 9.3x64 he has killed hundreds of animals with it. | |||

No! I'm not saying a CRF bolt rifle cannot be made with a CNC machine! What I am saying that a Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle required a lot of complex machining, and hand finishing. The PF rifles that exist today all CAN be made entirely by CNC. The only human need is to program the machine, and the parts are simply put together in an automotive style assembly line. The difference here is between two rifles one point being one made on CNC machine/assembly line, and the other being made by human hands. The fact that one is a CRF action, and the other being a push-feed has only to do with eachs' individual suitability for hunting dangerous game! I think you knew what the post was about but simply wanted to start a CRF/PF donnybrook here!  This is not the political cesspool you normally visit, the person who started this thread wanted to seriously know something about the Steyr Mannlicher/Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles for multi species hunting from plains game to dangerous game! What I gave him was the difference between the two rifles. Actually, NO, I wanted to know what the hell you were talking about. I was trying to visualize which part of a CRF bolt would have a workholding issue etc on CNC gear. No interest in a CRF/PF slingfest. There's plenty of BS in these threads without my instigation. Thanks for the reply. | |||

I've owned a couple SSG's and they have a habit of not picking up a round outta the mag. Not sure why but nothing to adjust or modify with the plastic parts, sold em. | |||
