Does anyone have a good one for 250 - 260 grain bullets? I am currently driving a 270 grain TSX at 2790 fps which is as flat shooting as my .300 Winchester magnum with 200 grain bullets or my .338 Winchester magnum with 225 grain bullets. This is at 300 and up to 400 yards. I thought this was the end-all for long range with my .375 but I wondered specifically about some of the 250 - 260 grain bullets out there. Does anyone have a good recipe for something that drops less than 8.5 inches at 300 yards? Or less than 23.5 inches at 400 yards? These ranges and drops are with a 200 yard zero by the way.

Thanks in advance,

jfm

What sized game are you shooting.

I am not at home right now, but I seem to recall that the 250, and 270 Barnes X and the Hornady 270 Spire Point shoot the flattest, with the most energy down range.

For smaller "big" game the 235 Barnes X or the 235 Speer would be worth a look.

Barnes now has a 250 grain tipped bullet. Reloader 15 would be the powder for the most velocity. You should get over 2900 f/s

I think GS Customs have a 250 gr and 260gr Monometal that have very high BCs and can be driven faster than most other bullets of the same weight. On my last Safari one hunter was using his custom 375 with 260gr factory Nosler Accubonds with fantastic results. I saw him make two shots at over 250 yards. One was a Oryx with a shoulder shot. I was watching in my 8 power Binos and thought I saw red dust flying. I was wrong as it was blood exploding out the far side of the animal. On his shot to a Red Hartebeast it was a straight on chest shot at almost 300 yards. This animal also fell down dead and when we arrived it looked like someone had poured a bucket of blood on the ground. Made me a believer.

Rechamber to .375 WBY and shoot Walterhog 300-grainers at 2740 fps (24" barrel) or 2800 fps (26" barrel).
300gr: 2800 fps
270gr: 2900 fps
250-gr: 3000 fps
One of those ought to do it. Wink

Windage is harder to estimate than distance at long range (if you carry a laser) - Worry more about accuracy & B.C./ energy of the bullet than drop.

If you are really serious about a long range 375 bullet for hunting then the 300gr boat tail from Sierra is the one to be looking at.

I shoot 270 plus or minus grain bullets out of my H&H chambered rifles at less velocity than that.

Around 2,600-2,650 fps is what I use.

Even at longer ranges, I've never felt the need for more speed.

But 300 yards is my self-imposed limit.

I load the 260gr Nosler Accubond at 2730ish fps out of my 375H&H M70 Classic.

Good BC, good bullet.

Sierra 350gr .375 cal SMK (supposedly does not exist but it's out there)

It is a very good long range bullet and if your barrel has a 1-11 twist it will stabilize it. It has a good BC .780 and despite being a Match King does kill well on thin skinned critters.

It may be better suited to the 378 WM

What a lot of people dont understand is that lighter bullets go faster initially but then drop like hell (relative) once the momentum is gone. As Phil said a 300 grain will shoot flatter than the lighter bullets in the 375 and likewise a 180 bullet when compared to a 150grain in a 30-06 and so on.......bullet shape of course also matter so compare like with like when deciding what to use.

Where does one buy these bullets in the USA?

RIP, thanks for the response/suggestion but I prefer the H&H chambering over the Weatherby for a couple of reasons. Resale value of rifles, tradition or nostalgia, sloping shoulders enhancing feed reliability in dangerous game hunting and the recoil factor. I can't explain it but even when I am loading 300 grain pills at 2650 fps, my rifle doesn't seem to kick that much. I think there is something regarding the shape of the H&H cartridge that mitigates recoil somehow. I have the same Winchester M70 stainless synthetic classic rifle in .338 Winchester that kicks like the devil when loaded with 250's at 2600 fps. I know this post was regarding high velocity loads and I believe the Weatherby round to be awesome for that purpose. I really want to know about HV loads in the H&H chambering. What about some of those GS Custom bullets? Anybody have any experience with those?

Thanks in advance,

jfm

onefunzr2,
Sorry, Saeed does not sell his bullets. If he ever does license them to a producer here in USA,
I hope he includes a .375/250-grain Walterpiglet version, along with the .375/300-grain Walterhog. Wink

jfm,
I am stuck on the 300-grain loads with the .375 H&H.
Phil's recommendation: thumb
I too have had great results for velocity and accuracy using the 300-grain Sierra GameKing,
a boat-tailed spitzer, non-bonded cup and core, conventional bullet, with high BC yet fairly short OAL.
It does not crowd the case capacity of the .375 H&H, like the monometal copper 300-grainers do.
I got 2532 fps with the old 300-grain Barnes XFB in a 24" barreled .375 H&H, using 72 grains of RL-15.
2600 fps with the 300-grain Sierra GameKing would be my choice long range load too.
That would be easy with several different powders.

In a 375H&H, the better GSC bullet is 265gr. It also depends on what is considered long range. Out to 300m the 200gr HV does quite well.

Gerard, I've read articles showing your 265 grain bullets capable of speeds of over 2900 fps out of the H&H cartridge using H4895 powder.I don't believe everything I read but that would do nicely as far as the ranges I'm thinking of. Provided the bullet has ample BC I would think out to 350 yards would be all I was looking for. Do you have any ballistic data for your product I might look into? Let me know if you get the time.

Thanks,

jfm

jfm, This is all you need for your H+H, whether it is deer/elk at 400 or a buff at 40.
Sounds exactly like same load/vel. that I shoot in my H+H's. My .02
