frank4570416, batting around ideas.
I intended to pick up a .416 Ruger Alaskan. It is pretty much exactly what I would like. Adequate to take anything on the planet, compact enough for my hunting style. But I am hearing things about the accuracy, not good things. That's not really acceptable for me. A replacement stock is rumored to take care of the accuracy problem. But with all that I might as well start from the ground up and build what I want.
So,what do you guys think? The idea is a 416 elephant capable bullet, in a compact weather resistant package.
I have no actual intention of hunting elephant at this point, but that could change.

BaxterBDo a 'Will' and get a CZ in 7mm mag, send it to Douglas, have them match the contour of the 7mm barrel and chamber and install in 416 Taylor. Put it in a McMIllan and go elephant hunting,

MingbogoIsn't the 416 Ruger is shorter than the 416 Taylor, requiring only a short and compact 06 action? Wondering if the same action is used for the CZ 550 in 30-06 and 7mm mag? In another word, does anyone know how many CZ 550 action lengths do they have?
If you want to build an Alaskan bolt guide gun then why not consider building it on a Montana 1999 stainless action with a short stainless barrel and a fiberglass stock. Don't think they have a 416 Ruger in their chamberings, but they will have a new line of "all weather" stainless big bore rifles coming this year (will introduce at the SHOT show) so you may want to wait to see what they will have in the store, as they might have a big bore that you can use as a base rifle to customize to your liking.

Woodrow SNo accurracy problems with mine. Rumors are usually hogwash.

steph123Mingbogo, the 416 Taylor is essentially a necked up 338 Win mag, with the shoulder pushed slightly forward. So it would have somewhat less case capacity compared to the 416 Ruger.

jeffeosso416 ruger is a great choice. Due to shape the case is short enough to fit in a 30-06 length action but have near the capacity of the 416 rem. it obviates my own 416 Accrel and I am still a fan
To be clear - it easily matches the spec loads of the rigby and Remington
Notes on the 416 Taylor. It was designed to match the 404 not the rigby. It has less case capacity then a 416 rem. Going anything like 2400 fps with a 400 gr bullet is grossly over pressure. Perfect example is the winmag vs Lott. If you run a spec length winmag at Lott vel then you are over pressure.

chuck375I love my CZ, machined from steel, no cast parts. Essentially a Mauser action, very accurate. Another option is buy a Winchester M70 stainless classic in 416 Rem, have it CeraKoted and the barrel shortened to 22" if you wish like we did with my sons left handed model ...

frank4570OMG it's a black rifle! Those things only belong on the battlefield!
Just kidding, sorry. I'm a little stressed over the whole political situation.
That rifle would actually be perfect.

So, what groups are you getting? You are talking about the 416 ruger Alaskan, correct?

Colt CommanderI have not been able to develop any accuracy loads testing yet,
only velocity with one box of Hornady 400 gr. softs.
With the few 3 shot groups I had at 100 yards, all were
sub 1 1/2".
At least for my rifle I do not think I will have any
problem putting together 1 in. Or less hunting loads.

JCS271Buy the Alaskan and never look back, I have both 375 and 416 and will never sell either one. One inch at 100yds shooting Hornady factory if I do my part. Works for me!

Venture SouthHere is my 458 Lott.
It is the closest I could get to building a M70 when there were none.
Frank has built the perfect utility rifle, although I still like the Lott.
My backup rifle is going to be a 416 Ruger alaskan, great rifle for the money and plenty accurate enough.
Most importantly for me, it is a hard working rifle and can take abuse.

p dog shooterI did a 416 taylor years ago if doing it again I do the 416 Ruger.
If I didn't have all the taylor reloading stuff I would have it changed to the Ruger

416TanzanThe 416Ruger is a great cartridge.
Yes, from what I've seen and heard, if tighter accuracy is needed, an "Alaskan" might need a stiffer stock, properly bedded, but it might be just fine out of the box. Boyd's composites work, or the full aluminum block Hogue.
If I were getting a new 416 that wasn't a Rigby I would get one of the new 416 Ruger Africans. The muzzle brake is removable and should be removed. I would trust Ruger's stock, though I would epoxy-bed nevertheless and add a Limbsaver recoil pad. Unfortunately, current models do not come in stainless, so you would need to find a leftover "Alaskan".

BiebsHere's a Bansner Safari, in 10.57 (416) Lazzaroni. It's a big case, and can be loaded 200 fps faster than a 416 Weatherby if needed. It's also a great case to load the newer 450gr 416 bullets, and still have room for enough power to drive them. On the other end, load it like a 404 Jeffery when the game is appropriate. I'd send it to a new home for under $3K.

AtkinsonThe 416 Ruger is a modern par excellent round and as good as the 416 Remington or Rigby from a practical standpoint..I would not hesitate to shoot elephant with it, and its already killed its share of elephant..
As to accuracy, that has little to do with the cartridge but rather the individual gun itself. I have built several of them on Mod 98 actions and they all shot very well indeed...I know several aquintences that have the Regular Ruger 77s in .416 and .375 Ruger and they are getting excellent accuracy.
I wouldn't put much stock in rumor of inacuracy, but keep in mind that any rifle can be inaccurate..If it is one has to have it glass bedded and accurized, but most factory rifles have to meet an accuracy standard before they leave the factory.
