Took the 45-120 out for a spin with some real heavyweights today. Unfortunately they weren't stabilized 100%, but they weren't keyholing. At 50 yards they hit below point of aim, but perfect windage, not sure if it was me, but they should be dropping more than the 405 grain bullets I normally shoot at 2550 fps.

Here's the recoil, sorry for the crappy cell phone video. I was shooting at the log that falls off the hay bale after being shot.

I had a piece of cardboard on the front, and the hole was slightly oval. Penetrated 20" however, not perfectly straight though. Stopped just short of the end of the log in a knot, and did not stay together at all. I was told these bullets would act like a solid, but I guess 1750ish fps was beyond what they were designed for?

I split the log and dug out all the lead I could find, it left a nice streak in the wood that made it simple to find the bullets. Here is what I found, with the largest piece making it about 20", the second largest piece made a separate channel and went about 18", and took the gas check with it.

Don't think I need to get any more of these bullets since they don't stabilize, I was expecting much more penetration, but I guess 20" is impressive for a bullet that wasn't even flying true.

Oh yeah-
720 grains @ 1750 fps kicks MORE than 405 grains @ 2550 fps.

That's a REAL long bullet. There are guys shooting 700 grain bullets in their .500 Smith and Wessons, and I doubt they're able to stabilize them with the limited velocity potential of the short barrel of the revolver. Too much of a good thing???? Point of diminishing returns?

I'm going to rent a throater so I can seat that bullet out to the third to bottom crimp groove. Should be able to get 1900 fps with that much more space in the case. Gonna look awful funky.

After reaming out the throat supposedly I can get 2000 fps, which will stabilize the bullet. Not going to push it in a handi-rifle though. If anyone would like to donate a Ruger #1 for my "research" I will gladly see how much recoil my retinas will take! Big Grin

Next video will probably be some 450 grain A-Frames and 500 grain Solids and Softs, maybe some 720 grainers again.

tyler, i did a post a while back on my 458 lott using those bullets from ranger rick. i beleive i got around 1900 fps with hodgdon 4895. and they shot fairly well out of my cz. and i will agree they kicked a little more than 405 and 500 grain loadings.
