Hey guys, gals (no indeterminates though), I have always used 96 - 98 grains of H 4831 with 400 grain bullets in the 416 Rigby. I wish to explore ("I wish to explore"; boy that sounds like Professor Pinhead in action) lighter loads of medium burning powders to decrease the total recoil. I would use foam, dacron or Puff-Lon fillers above the powder. IIRC, Federal uses something similar to RL-15 without a filler, but they use a non available to the public extra hot primer to get everything burned. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks for your time and effort. I know this question was asked by me a few years ago, but now I have three ring binders with document protectors just waiting to be filled with the information. Rl 22 has always been a favorite of mine for any magnum cartirdge. You can load it w/o filler as it is a slightly compressed load at full strength, you can hit 2400 fps at the lower end. John

My rifle liked 99gr Re22, 400 Swift, Fed 215GM, 2425 , cases lasted well,(Norma) Loaded some Varget in my .416 Taylor 75 gr. did well with the 400gr, never tried it in the Rigby. DuggaBoye-O NRA-Life Whittington-Life TSRA-Life DRSS DSC HSC SCI

Another way to get a lower recoil is to reduce the bullet weight. I have used the 350 gr Barnes X bullet with 98 gr of AA 4350 yielding a velocity of 2700 fps. Have taken Cape Buffalo, Bison, and a variety of plains game with the load. Penetration is terrific ... only one recovered bullet ... from under the front skin of a Cape Buffalo after it broke the right rear femur! If you can get an RL-15 load to work (with a FED 215 and dacron) you will get lower recoil. Have done that with .470 NE but not the .416 Rigby. 95gr of IMR4064 worked well with a 350gr pill in my old Rigby. Lit off with Fed 215 or CCI250 primers. MV of ~ 2750fps 90gr of IMR3031 worked with the same pills too (350gr Speers). Excellent elk load, BTW.

Hi MJines. She came out not as well as I would have hoped, but far, far better than than if we had not intervened. She had a fair amount of Cardiac involvement, and will be fighting arthritis for a long time. It took a while to explain to her local doctor that with severe Lyme disease she needed every last bit of those medicines, NOW. He didn't quite understand until I explained that he was going for a swim in the Zambezi with freshly butchered cows legs tied to each of his legs after he got pitched into a hole full of Nile Crocs; as was usual and customary for anyone who tried to dicert money for pain and suffering for black market profits. Ganyana and I are going to visit the woman in question when I feel perkier. In any case she can see, walk and talk. She doesn't have much endurance, but she will do ok. I will take pictures in person. If there was any "hinkiness", I'll take care of business and refund any monies that might have been diverted. My gut tells me all went well, but I always wait until I have seen or touched everything. I have a packet of everybodies letters on the mantle. It felt nice to stand up and make a difference.

That's good to hear -- sometimes living to fight another day is all the victory you can ask for. Hopefully her doctor's treatment did not impact her recovery in any material way. Thanks for the update, hope she continues to recover and improve. Mike
