Barnes Tipped Triple-Shock X Bullets 458 SOCOM
Anyone try these in a 458 WIN / LOTT for hunting Bambi or plinking?

458 to hunt Whitetails? Really???

Are you trying to make them to involuntary kart-wheels? Or are you going for the gutting and skinng combo with a single shot?

Those 300gr Barnes would be interesting [understatment Smiler] to use on hogs. For that purpose, I might load them up a little, but still not full blast. My 458 has a 20" twist rate, short throat, so I think those 300gr Barnes would be excellent in my rifle.

I would like to read a report of actual use too.

I did a quick calculation on the specs of that bullet out of a 458WM. Assume modest 2600 fps at muzzel = way over kill, but so what. over 4500 ft lbs energy at the muzzel, nearly 2000 ft lbs at 300 yds. - about 2.7" high at 100 yds, zero at 200 yds, 12" low at 300yds.

Granted, that's a bit much for deer, so I would probably like a lighter/slower load, and limit the range to 150yds. For longer range, I have other rifles that won't kick so hard.

the 250gr .458 for the 45/70 would be a good choice.. its designed to operate at the speeds the socom would drive it.

Brando,
yep, a .458 for deer ... and its a socom, so basically a 45/70.. once you start whacking them with the bigbores and seeing how little MEAT damage there is, you won't go back to the little ones...

funny story ... night before last, i openned a box of bullets.. my wife said "oh, how cute, do you have anything this small to shoot them?" ... 300gr .375 dgx

Actually... I used Barnes 45 cal sabots in my muzzleloader last year (250gr @ 2100fps) for whitetails & dumped a nice buck at 30yds. I do my own processing, and there was no more meat loss than my 308WIN w/ 150's.

I got a 450 Marlin I want to use on a Whitetail just to see how well it performs. I dont know if I would want to use my 500AR on one, though it would be kinda fun to see the look on my buddies face when the rifle went off...

Brando,
just wait till you hit a deer with a 535 .. or pig .. just avoid the head on a pig ... it will shatter the skull

Im going to pop the 500AR cherry deer season 2011 in NC, probably will schwack a doe out of the gate just to see what happens. My buddy is trying to convince me to use one of the Hornady dangerous game DSX bullets...

If I found some 300 TTSX's I would load them up to 3000+ in my 460 and it would be used on deer. Sound like fun haha

In a word - AWESOME!

You will NOT be disappointed -whether you use the old FN or the new Red Ruber Tipped ammo. Both are bang-flop on the whitetails I have used them on in the Northeast.

Try those 350 grain Mag Tips, or 350 grain NF SS designed for the 45-70.

I've been shooting handloads in my 458 WM with 350 gr RN Hornadys, and the Speer 350gr FN, and some Swift 350 gr FN, at about 2250 fps cronied. Accuracy is excellent, but to me the recoil is stout, mostly because the rifle is light. In fact, my Leupold 1x4 scope busted inside from the recoil, and it's at the Leupold repair shop right now. I'm having open sights installed as soon as I can line up a gunsmith. Anyway, I like the 350gr bullets, but I haven't shot any game with them yet, only maybe 50-60 rounds at targets. I've got some 350gr Barnes TSX bullets on the way.

I'm loading for the 458 WM.

I just received a box of the 300gr Barnes tipped .458 Socom bullets. I'm going to do some testing at the range this weekend, so I'm looking for powder charge suggestions.

Looks like the 458 Socom ammo runs these about 1800 fps. So, I'm thinking of about 60grs of H4895, Fed Mag primer. I'm thinking that will get me somewhere between 1800 - 1900 fps.

Anyone have any better ideas?

BTW, these loads are specifically for my annual Texas hog hunt in Janauary.

That was my understanding , that the 458 SOCOM matches the 300 45-70 loads. I use the factory Win Partition [Nosler] in my 45-70 which gives excellent expansion and penetration. The Barnes should do at least as well.
