Hi all I understand that the .416 Rem. is great for DG but realistically I wont ever make Africa. I do however have a yearning for a .416 in a Ruger number 1. I have for a long time. What bullets in this gun would be good for shooting between 200 -250 yards or is that a bit optimistic for this gun? Jim

Jim, Go ahead & buy it mate !! You can get 340 gr woodleigh protected points and when 2" high at 100 yards they will be zero at 200 yards roughly and be 8" low at 300 yards this is from a .416 rigby starting them out at around 2700-2800 fps. Thye will still be doing 2000 odd fps at 300 yards & hit with 3500 foot pounds aprox. The 340 gr woodleigh BC is about .425 I looked at using this bullet but settled on the 410 gr woodleigh which only gives up 2" trajectory but hits with more wallop. You would even get better results from the Barnes X bullets but there to dear in Oz. I do not hunt Africa, may never, I use mine for Aussie stuff. Also consider the CZ 550 .416 Rigby I love mine. JIM I load Hawk 300gr.025jkt in my 450/400 3 1/4" double rifle at @2330fps. They hit deer and wild hogs like the Hammer of Thor. Recoil is also less than the 400gr. loads, but most important these bullets EXPAND on these size animals. If I was going to shoot bigger big game I would use the 400gr. bullet. I have killed 2 Caribou and one Black Bear with this rifle with 400gr. Woodleigh soft points at @2200fps. If you "need" to shoot long range in the 416 No1 a bullet around 325 to 350 will work fine. I agree with PC BUY IT. No1 rifles are fun to hunt with, the 416 is an excellent caliber.

I have a 260-yard "flat" load worked up with 93.0 grains of BL-C(2) and moly-coated Speer 350-grain Mag Tips. Russ

Gentlemen, I know that the .416 Rigby, when loaded with 300 gr. Barnes X bullets is devastating on Plains game in Africa. My friend, Mike Griffin, used on this summer, and it was dynamite on whatever he pointed it at. I have the exact Ruger No1 416 Rem rifle, topped with a Weaver V3 in Leupold low mounts. With 350 gr. Speer Mag-Tips @ 2545 fps, I shot a mule deer and a moose with it this past September. I have also shot the 400 gr. Hornady RNSP, and my friend used one @ 2350 fps to take a black bear last spring. I haven't shot much past 110 yards, some at 220 yards. With my 350 gr. Speer load, +3" @ 110y puts me dead on at 220y. I only tried 275 yards once, and I got a BIG lesson is gravity! Low velocity and a low BC aren't a good combo for flat shooting! If I were looking to stretch the 416 into something it isn't, I'd try the 300 gr. Barnes X @ 2900 fps or so. The now discontinued 325 gr. X would be another good choice. Great rifle and cartridge though.

didn't i already post on this one? load it with 400's... aim it 2" high at 100, and have a ball. or, use light barnes bullets, get 2700-2800 fps, and then have mountain rifle... jeffe

I have gone to shooting the 325 grain Barnes X bullet for the light stuff. RL-15 @ 87.5 grains of powder gives me 2825fps for long shots on plains game.
