Hi guys I'm new here but judgeing from the forum topics you guys know your stuff so here goes. I'm looking for another big bore but I'm not sure which one to go with. I already own two 375 H&H, and used to own a 416 rem (I still regret that sale) I'm just wondering if I should go bigger, or just get another 416, If my plans work out this rifle will see africa, so factory available ammo would be a plus, as I'm not the best at reloading. so any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.

458 lott - plenty of power plus cheap plinking bullets are readily available. With a 400 grain spitzer it is also a good 300 yard elk gun.

thanx I like recomendation for elk, on a side note I killed my first whitetail with my 375. My concern with the lott is getting brass in canada. thankyou for the reply.

If you are thinking bolt rifle I agree with 500grains. The 458 Lott is a great choice.

If you find full power loads have too much recoil, contact www.superiorammo.com and tell them to load 500gr Woodleigh or Swift softs and 500 gr Woodleigh solids at 2150 to 2200fps.

probably will be a bolt rifle , I'd love a double but I can't afford one, recoil can be managed I have fired a friends .500 A square with no problems I just need more practice.

Yes, go with the Lott. Hornaday makes brass and loaded ammo. You can use 458wm ammo in a Lott if neccesary.(similar to using 38 special ammo in a 357 magnum revolver, oe 44 special ammo in a 44 magnum revolver.)

Nice to see you finally made it on AR.

I am going to parrot the crowd so far...I think you oughta go for the 458 Lott. Its EXTREMELY versatile. Lots of 458 bullets if you take up reloading (or get me to do it like Tim does!). The 350gr X bullet would be a good elk bullet too. Plus, you can always shoot 458 WM cartridges out of it.

Of course, there could never be too many 470 Mbogo's around!

thank you all for the advice,one question about the lott, I know you can fire the standard 458 win in the chamber but do I have to worry about the shorter cartridge feeding reliably in the longer action?

Go with the CZ550 American Safari Magnum in 458Lott it's a great rifle for the money and it feeds even the shortest Winchesters such as the 350 grainers no problems. Rodney.

I like the 416 as well as the 45 calibers, but the 458 Lott is the way to go, IMHO, especially if you dont reload much. The Lottt is like having a switch barrel heavy using either 458 Winchester or Lott.

Axle has shot my 470 Mbogo and Dave E.'s 500 A2 before. That kind of HP can be very addictive!

Were it myself it would be a 416 Rem.... or the 416 Dakota............The 416 Taylor is great and very easy to shoot well ............ With the cost of brass I wouldn,t spend a penny on the Rigby............ The Lott is a super cartridge and is what the win mag should have been back when it came out...................... The CZ factory rifle is great but some of them need a little slicking up to feed well .... I think its a toss up as to weather it or the Ruger is the toughest bolt rifle made today..............I,m thinking seriously about selling the 458Lott barrel thats on one of my CZ,s but I can,t decide between the 400 A-Square-Pondoro or the 358 STA to make up on it....................

Quite so. With present day quality Solids we can come down in caliber for DG. Harry Manners did it with a .375 H&H without present day Solids featuring flat meplats.

The .416 Taylor was indeed a clever development, shooting a 400-grain bullet from a .458 Win case. Custom guns can be built cheaper as .458 Winchesters can simply be converted by changing the barrel.

Thanks for all the advice. Since I've already owned and sold a .416 rem, it's time to go bigger. It will be a .458 lott, I just have to decide on factory rifle or to have one built.

What about a .450 Rigby? Does anyone have one of these?

Well, I am Just an average guy who builds rifles for himself, but I will throw in several of my thoughts.

I have a .416 Taylor that I built several years ago on a Mark X action. While I also own a CZ .416 Rigby in classic African rifle styling. My favorite hunting rifle is my .416 Taylor! it has 4 round capacity, 22 inch barrel, side swing safety, Ivory bead front ramp, Rear Williams Peep sight, walnut stock with 2 crossbolts, done in english express style, and a Pachmyer premium Recoil pad.

It is easy to carry, handles well in a pinch, and hits like Thor's hammer on any thing I have pointed it at...I use 350 grain bullets at approx 2,500 ft/sec. for anything other than Dangerous game. It also shoots flat enough to be used at any reasonable hunting range. I just run Winchester .458 Win brass through a FL sizing die and I am good to go!

I had a .458 Win built on a Model 70 Winchester that I sold to a member of this board and built my Taylor...I am happy and don't regret getting rid of the .458. Thats my input for what it is worth!

At the sake of being redundant, go with the 458 Lott. If you were going to hand load I’d say maybe the 416 Rigby (arguably a better “all-around†heavy cartridge than the Lott). The Lott is a very versatile cartridge in its own right with the high availability & variety of bullet weights and its ability to digest 458 Win Mag ammo. The Lott is also cheaper to operate on average than a 416 Rigby.

The Ruger is a good rifle but is more expensive than and not as customizable as a CZ 550. The CZ 550 is the way to go. Both of mine never had trouble feeding 458 Win Mag ammo, but did have some trouble feeding 500 grain Lott ammo. This was a long time ago and I am sure CZ would have addressed the problem by now (if not a good smith can fix this problem easily).

OBTW, if you ever start loading your own you can eaisly make 458 lott cartridges from your 375 brass!

In my eyes the 416 Rem Mag and equivalents are all you need.

Dust off that glorious .375, buy couple boxes of ammo tipped with SwiftAFrames & African Grand Slams, and go hunting to a third world country!
