Ruger RSM changes
Has Ruger made any changes to the RSM this year? I saw a .375 at one of the large chain stores Saturday that had been marked down quite a bit. The clerk said it was because that model had been discontinued. I hadn't heard of Ruger making any changes. On the other hand, they have bumped the MSRP up to $2,400, which I believe is a couple hundred $$ more than last year.

Jeff:

Do you think that it's possible that Ruger may be simply dropping the .375 H&H in the RSM now that they have their own .375? The RSM in .375 H&H is very heavy for caliber and perhaps it's not such a good seller for them. Maybe they just plan to keep the Rigby and Lott or maybe even add another large caliber to the RSM line.

I didn't take it that they were dropping the entire line, but he wasn't very clear. He was probably in his early 20's. I have been looking for a RSM in 458 Lott for a while now, and if it was in that caliber, I would have bought it on the spot (only $1,400.00). The RSMs seem to have all but disappeared off of the cabela's website, Gunsamerica, and Gunsinternational recently. Gunbroker has a few, but not in 458 Lott.

Ruger at the moment with their two rifles and calibres would be the counterpart of Wby offering the 375 Wby in the Synthetic Mark V but not in the Safari but having 375 H&H in the Safari Smiler Even the case capacity differences are similar.

I actually asked that very question, but didn't want to start another pissing match over the ruger vs HH..

the RSM is their cadillac line, they aren't going to drop the 375, the SECOND most popular of the RSM line, (even though its an overweight PIG of a rifle, imnsho)

there's no comparison between the m77mkII and the RSM .. other than general overall shape, the rifles are hugly different in size and funciton!

Still not showing the 505 Gibbs.

Never mind then, but I do have one by CZ!

Would the 505 fit? I have the CZ (like it fine) and would not hesitate two get a 2nd if the RSM was offered.

If it would then so would the 585HE - Imagine that!

Jeff,
I've been looking for the right one. QD's would be a bonus. My "cpa" would have the final word on it, though.

Ruger did make a few .505 Gibbs about 10 years ago. They did them kind of cheap though by reboring Rigby barrels. You could see on the side of the barrel where the .416 Rigby had been milled off and .505 Gibbs restamped.

Viper,
I believe Jim Dubell made those, not ruger factory, but i could be wrong

Which is No 1, Lott or Rigby. In Australia I would bet the 458 Lott but in CZ 416 Rigby much more than 458 Lott and 375 way out in front.

rigby was the primary -- which confused me. I guess Shelby was more widely read than i thought.

To clarify things a bit. Jim Dubell made my 500 Jeffery RSM. I had wanted a 505 Gibbs Jim did not feel that the bolt face was safe going that big. The 505 Gibbs were a conversion availible by Bowen for about $1200. The 505 Gibbs gave a magazine capacity of 2, my 500 Jeffery has 3 down. I can post some photo's later if you would like to see what Jim did. No I donot believe Ruger ever made anything larger than a 458 Lott which I have one.

Thanks Brad Smiler

Brad,

How did he get 3 500 Jeffery down in the RSM? My RSM will only hold two, that is why it is a 500A2 of which it will barely hold three down. I am interested in how he did it so if you can explain it I would greatly appreciate it.

I did see a Ruger factory add years ago that featured the .505 Gibbs. I don't have a copy but it was a full page add in a gun magazine. At one time they at least advertised the .505 as a factory custom shop option. I looked at a Ruger .505 that was said to be a factory gun and it had the milled over restamped caliber marking. After seeing it I went with the CZ. Truthfully now, I can't say for sure it was a factory gun but it was supposed to be. I can say 100% that at one time Ruger did advertise the .505 Gibbs.

Here are some photos that show my 500 Jeffery. Hopefully this will help show what was done to make it work.

Brad,

Thanks for sharing the pictures. There was a considerable amount of work there. Your mag box was shortened and a ramp extension added, that in itself is a BIG plus!

Scott:

When I started the project I decided to prentend that this was going to been a single barrel african (Double Rifle in concept). I told Jim to make it work with the Woodleigh 570grn softnose bullets loaded into Jamison brass and not to worry about anything else. This was before Hornady released their 570grn DSX bullets. I plan to keep the velocity between 2150-2300 Fps. The goal was reliability with a single round the same idea if you where getting a round to work in a double gun. My RSM 500 Jeffery cost me about 1/4 of what a 500 Nitro would cost but still gives me some fun. I know the rifle doesn't like the Hornady 570 solids very much so those go in one at a time. I am VERY HAPPY with the result. Jim sold me on the 500 Jeffery and made it work.
