This is a reloaders quirk. While watching a couple of different African hunting videos I've watched hunters stop and look away to pick up their brass while their Buffalo is running away. Is brass worth that much.

I don't worry about brass when hunting dangerous game..Sometimes I will tell the boy carrying the water to pick them up and most of the time one of our camp staff will pick them up and give them to you later. but never while a shot buff is retreating..I'm still shooting him until he has 4 feet up or has gone out of sight.

I'm only a reloader on trips to the range! When the bacon hits the skillet the brass can recycle itself, go to the moon, entertain the hyenas, or whatever. I can just imagine those guys picking up their brass and looking up to see old M'bogo preparing to do some picking up of his own!

Old habits die hard. I still fight the impulse to, at the very least, spot where my brass landed so that I might retrieve it afterwards. Ridiculous, I know. A friend once asked why I chose the big .505 Gibbs casing over the others, to which I replied only half jokingly: "So I can find the brass easier".

I don't look at anything but the Buffalo while shooting, till he's down! That being said, one of the first things I do when I get in the field is to make everyone in the party aware that "I WANT MY EMPTIES" so some one always picks the stuff up! If I get it fine, but I'm not going to cry if I don't. BUTTTTT, Man some of the things I shoot cost $10 bucks a pop, and some of it is hard to find on anything like a regular basis! So the guy that picks up my brass is in for a solid tip at the end of the trail.

I always pick my brass. Under normal conditions, I pick the case as it comes out of the magazine empty.

But, if conditions are not right, I always go back and collect my brass.

I do not think I have lost more than a handful throughtout all the years I have hunted.
