http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas...categoryId=SEARCH_gl Anyone know anything about a La Pour Custom Winchester? I've tried some web searches and have not come up with anything yet. Thanks. Will J. Parks, III

Its Ed Lapour from out on the Peninsula here (Washington) . I have seen this rifle in person (not handled it thought). He's a member of the gunmakers guild and from what I understand is does top work. There is a patch on the left side of the action, probably from an old lyamn, just FYI. you can see it in one of the pics.

Dunno. If it matches the description, I don't think you can go wrong. $5800 is a fair price. I wouldn't have paid $7500, but if you're looking for that caliber, yeah I' get it. There are two types of people in the world: those that get things done and those who make excuses. There are no others.

Beautiful rifle! Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

It is several miles from my house and I've seen it many times. It's not my style, but well executed. Let me know if you want me to go down there and take a look at it or shoot some pictures for you. I can also ask interrogate the Gun Library staff for you.

Very nice rifle. I would inquire w/ the named maker as to it's history to verify what you're buying. Also, look at the 5th picture and zoom in. It looks like the stock has been altered, plugged, patched or something in the area where a 98 bolt release would be on the left side. For that kind of $$, I would want to know.

A lot of fine actions were screwed up with those side mounts.

I'm no expert by any means, but I thought the pre-1964 Winchester Model 70s had those holes factory drilled and tapped into the left side of the action. I think the wood patch looks pretty good under the circumstances, but I'm with reddy375 on the Magnaport issue. I don't remember if they all did, but I know that the target models did because I owned and shot one (with Redfield International sights) circa 1960: James "Growing old is not for sissies"

Hi Will, Have you looked @ Champlins bolt action list- quite a few really nice 416's there. http://champlinarms.com/Defaul...s&StyleID=2&GunID=30 I know that the conner above has been for sale for quite a while. To my uneducated eye a couple of them seemed to be priced more than fair- the Dale Goens .404 looks pretty darn nice. As does the brevex mauser 416 rigby. good luck whatever you decide on.

I have seen and handled this rifle at the Lacey, WA Cabela's. Ed Lapour has been my gunsmith for several years. He is a member of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild, and does spectacular work. He built this rifle several years ago for a client, a doctor, I believe. Originally it had a peep sight, but the client wanted it fitted with a scope. Ed did so, and the cut-out on the left side of the stock was filled with a piece of nearly-matching walnut. Personally, I would have simply left the cut-out. Ed built it, and you can rely on it. You can call Ed and discuss it with him. PM me for his number, or get it on the web site. Brice
