Has anyone played with the 300ultra mag necked up to 416?Is there much of a velosity gain over the 416 rem?it would make a great long range rifle if you could get the 350gr x bullet over 2800fps.Any info would be great.

...it's called a 416 rigby...

nah, but close enough. Hawk bullets did some work on it.

If you want near Rigby performance in a shorter case, dont forget the .404 Jeffery or the .416 Dakota.

It would be less impressive than a .416 Rigby! If you want major velocity with a 350gr bullet just try one in a 460 WBY you can exceed 3100fps. Compare that to a .338 Lapua that can't even hit an honest 3000 fps with a 250 gr bullet. Now if you could only design a boattailed 350 gr 458 bullet?-Rob

Rob,

You're treading on my idea for the 458 Alaskan Varminter [Big Grin] , aka 458/505 improved, with the goal of 500 gr @ 3000 fps. [Eek!]

Unless you're married to having a medium-length barrel... go with a 28- to 30-inch tube and use a triplex load. Review Dick Casull's old work.

Ray, Paul- We have real jobs and they pay for the experiments. 500 grs at 3000fps, what a sissy load! A real man can handle 900 grs at 3100 fps! Been there recentrly and done that! ( It hurts too!)-Rob

Paul H- Heck 500 grs at 3000 fps is doable with a 585 NYATI. Heck old Monte got 3100 from a 775 gr .700. You need a bigger action!-Rob

Hey ROBGUNBUILDER !
it's very interesting to read and get to know about this "huge projects".It's also fun to know that one doesn't have to spend 78500 to get the .700 NE.One can get the .700 or .600 Imp.for 5000 right ??
Actually, what gun did you fire which launched 900 gr. bullets to 3100 fps, what barrel lenght,,what load,,what gun. I'am pretty sure it's possible to get one of these monsters( i was thinking about the .700 IMPROVED, WITH A 28 inch barrel to launch the 1000 gr.@2980 fps) here in Norway.
Could you tell me about your experience pulling the trigger with this load ?

HI,

Now it seems that I will be gotting a cz550 action and I will get a 416 Rigby. I have taken long enough for this decision, what is the fps a 416 RIGBY gets with a 350 grain, I think I should come close to 2800 fps, if I wanted to. Thanks,Kev
