Guys, I just noticed something.

If you go to CZ's current web site and click on their Safari Classic rifle it shows you the current chamberings for that line. They now chamber the .300 H&H, .500 Jeffery, .375 H&H, .338 Lapua, .338 Win. Mag., and .416 Remington but they are no longer showing the .505 Gibbs. I know there are still a lot of Gibbs on dealers shelves but did CZ drop the Gibbs?

The website still shows 404 Jeffery, 450 Rigby, 505 Gibbs and 500 Jeffery. Follow this link and mouse over the safari classics tab ...

Chuck, yes the old Safari Classic catalog still shows the .505. However, if you go to the main page and clic on the Safari Classics they show all the new calibers including the .500 Jeffery, .338 Lapua, and even the .416 Remington but the .505 is gone baby gone.

Sorry for the misinformation, that's so sad. I almost changed my order from a 375 H&H to the 505 Gibbs but my sons rebelled, they figured I wouldn't let them fire it due to the recoil ...

I was looking at 527's on their site a few years back, and didn't see the caliber listed I wanted, although I knew they were chambered in it in the past. I called or emailed them asking if it was still available, and they said yes, it just wasn't listed with the new calibers.

Ask 'em.

Select: "CZ 550 Safari Classics"

The dropdown menu for the calibers offered includes 2 for the 500 Jeffery, one glossy and one matte.

Nada, nyet, nolo .505 Gibbs listed there.

ALSO note, no .416 Rigby ... but it is still listed in:
CZ 550 American Safari Magnum (chubby walnut)
CZ 550 Safari Magnum (Euro-Lux/Hogback walnut)
and the outstanding new
CZ 550 American Safari Magnum-Kevlar

No .505 Gibbs

At least they are offering Kevlar now. That might be profitable ...

If only the bean counters get around to offering all the various calibers/chamberings in the Kevlar/synthetic stock ...
I might be interested. thumb

Here is a real boner or typo by CZ:

Says the twist on this .338 Lapua Mag. is 1:14 in.
Eeker

CZ 550 Magnum H.E.T.

BTW the .338 Lapua Mag. and .338 WinMag are both offered in the CZ 550 Safari Classic and the specs for both of those list a 1:12" twist:

I think the bean counters should consider 1:10" for the sporting .338's and 1:7" gain-twist for the H.E.T. in .338 Lapua Mag. Smiler

I own one, and love the CZ .505 Gibbs. For some time now it has been the only realistic way for many to purchase a .505.

I emailed CZ in regard to them no longer listing it on their webpage. Once I receive a reply I will post their response.

JRO:

There are two .500 Jefferys but the .505 is no longer shown as a current caliber in the Safari Classics pull down menu where they show current prices.

Will CZ explain the rationale?

I spoke to a rep and according to him they do still carry the 505 Gibbs, and they added new calibers to the Safari Classic line: 416 Rem, 338 Lapua, and 338 Win Mag. they also sent me a new 2008 catalog

Looks like CZ is doing some nice new things.
Did you see the ne stock on the CZ 550 american ?
I handeld a 6.5X55 with that stock a while back. Big improvment. But its still and awfull lot o rifle to haul around for such a mild mannerd cartridge.
But I wouil love one in 9.3X62 , or 35 whelen.
Put a banded front site on it and a flip up express sight and it would be great. But I would prefer a standard trigger on such a rifle ...tj3006

I wish CZ would make a Lapua in a less than 10.9 LB rifle!

I got a hold of CZ and was told the same as eurocentric, they do still offer it. It seems to be an omission on the website but is available.

Good news.
Must have been the add-on of the double 500 Jeffery listing (gloss and matte) that discombobbulated them.

That September 2007 BASA journal article claimed that the .505 Gibbs had been the biggest seller for CZ-USA in their Safari Classic offerings.

I bet it is also the reason they finally started double cross-bolting the stocks after repairing too many cracked stocks.
