Went and picked my 577 up Friday, final finishing touches put on,man it looks even nastier with the finish on! The gunsmith and I went out and shot it Friday eve,he also brought his 500 Jeff and a 505 Gibbs he is working on,think I may end up with a 505 here in the furure! Here are some pics of my finished rifle. - - - - The picture of the target is a group shot at 50 yds, load is 130 grs RL15 with a 750 Woodleigh solid! Also before and after pics of the rifle when it was in the "white".

Very cool looking Ruger No. 1 my friend! I like the stock and the heavy barrel. The safety is recessed nicely. It is one serious looking monster 577. Who is the gunsmith if you do not mind me asking? Thanks.

PC-The bbl is actaully chrome-moly,the one picture is when it had no finish on it. Yes it is a 577 NE 3",weighs in at a whopping 10 3/4 lbs [Eek!] ,the finish is black parkerize. Has two mercury supressors in the stock and the muzzle break really works!
Mingo,This rifle really turned nice! That is the original wood that came on the #1 I started with. Some time in the future I am going to replace the wood with some thing fancy, bastogne or circassian walnut. A local gunsmith did all the work I can put you in touch with him if you like.
Black powder-big bore,Yes I am sure of the load,130 grs Rl15,gives 2150 fps! I am not limited to using double rifle loads since the Ruger #1 action is strong enough to handle modern loads. At 137 grs of RL 15 the cases become sticky! I used 585 nyati laoding data to develope my loads,I started way at the bottom end,I use 125 grs RL15 for the standard 750 @2050fps. I plan on taking it Black bear hunting in June,I will be using a 650gr woodleigh softnose with 112 grs RL15,thise gives right around 1650fps,very comfortable to shoot. I also have video of my shooting sessions with this rifle ,for any of you skeptics out there!

That is one serious looking tube. Sounds like a real fun project. You'll have to make sure there is a hill behind the bear so you don't knock him into the next State. That's a real nice and serious looking rifle you have there.
Take care,
Dave

Nice rifle. If you are going to carry extra ammo on the buttstock I suggest you get it from
www.murrayleather.com The part that wraps around the stock is smooth leather and will not abrade your face in recoil. The ctg holders are high quality elastic and are made in Nitro Express calibres. It makes reloading a single shot or a double almost as fast as a bolt rifle, except with 100% reliability. [Big Grin]

Diesel Dude,

try the woodleigh 650 gr BP express bullets there perfect for smaller than intended game and may make for a lighter recoiling load for when your feeling a little flat [Wink] I use these in my .585 Nyati.

Diesel_Dude,
I like the look of the #1. My .510/460Wby long should be mailed out to me this week.

I looked through your past 577 posts but couldn't find one mention of the barrel length on your Ruger. What is your barrel length?

ps. Have you shot any of Wayne Doudna's .588" cast bullets yet? I ordered 500 of them to plink with in my T-Rex and they look great, at a phenominal price (100 for $11). Also, for you .510" shooters, Wayne has some great .512" FNGC 670gr cast bullets. I plan on using them in my .50BMD Short & .510/460Wby Long to shoot metallic targets that I don't want BMG bullet holes in. http://www.customcastbullets.com/rifle.htm

PC- I do shoot the 650's for my light load! they are much fun!
Per 577,I wnat to say 2285 I have to look in my log book, they sure do snort!
Gemini-Dave Caboth of Nitro Gun Works,He is an absolute wizard with big bores and a real easy going person! I can email you his phone# if you like.
Dark Paladin,I shoot mostly out at Birchwood, but yeah lets do it let me know when. Another place I like to go is out Point Mckanzie road, two big gravel pits out there to shoot in. I have been saving five gallon solvent cans from work, fill them full of water and let the fun begin!
BMG- Just got my first two hundred of them today! they weigh in at 765 grs, would you mind sharing your load data? My ruger is strong enough to handle T rex loads. The bbl length is 24".
I hope to some day go to Africa,I would love to go after a big mean cape buffalo! Hopefully i will get a chance to get a moose or bear in my sights this year!!

DieselDude and Dark Paladin. We should get together for some bigbore fun at either Rabbit Creek or Birchwood. I'll bring my 458 Lott and 470 NE pistol (Encore). I'm also building a 600 OK that should be done sometime this fall.

Diesel Dude,
I am copying your project. I do not have a Ruger #1 yet so I just have some questions.

Can I make this 577NE from any of the Ruger #1 actions, or do I need the #1H (Tropical) in a 458win/lott? Do all the Tropical have the make barrel contour?

Are there any thing els that I should know of? Pac-Nor are making semi-finish 577NE for #1, anyone that have tried these?

TomJac- the gunsmith I used highly recomended a Tropical #1,due to the barrel hangar. The .585 barrel contour was not that much differnt from the 458 WM barrel that came off the action originally. I would imagine that Pac nor could do the chamber, but I know there was alot more work involved, like opening up the feed chute, getting the breech block to drop to accomadate teh large rim on the 577 case. I can give you the phone number of the gunsmith that did the work if you like!
Yukon Delta- With all the brass, dies gunsmithing work and the cost of the original rifle I started with the grand total is some where around 2000.00-cant put a price on fun [Big Grin]

Pac Nor have a straight tapper #7 (http://www.pac-nor.com/contours/), with 1.2" base (or is the Ruger #1 1.150") and .875" muzzle. This contour do I think will fit. I will go for a Stainless steel action and barrel. And yes, Pac-Nor will make a prefit bbl complete with chamber, threads and contour for Ruger #1.

RCBS have 577NE 3" in their special dies list, anyone know what they ask for it? Delivery time? Or is there other that makes this dieset cheaper? What about brass, is Bertram brass ok? MidWay Norway have these for $160/20=$8piece -Real expencive-

You should try Horneber brass instead of Bertram. Bertram is sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Horneber is supposedly allways good and about the same price. I think maybe Bell allso does this round..?

Thomas M,
Since you also are from Scandinavia, do you know where I can get these brasses? Do they have a homepage? Is it a German based company?

--Edit
Huntington did have Horneber in 577NE 3" at $78.98 for boxes of 20. (Bertram $82.98)

Tomjac-I got my dies from CH tool, they work great. Cost for the dies, shell holder and adapterbushing for my press was 175.00 deliverd! You are going to pay over 300.00 for just the dies for RCBS.
I use the Horneber 577 brass, order it from Huntingtons, right now they are out of stock though,Iwas also lucky to find some A-sqaure and BELL brass at a local gunshop! BTW CH tool has a pretty good website(ch4d.com)Dave is really a nice guy, hard to get a hold of on the phone, their emali response time is fairly quick.
As far as bullets go,i have been shooting the 650 gr woodleighs, they are cheaper than the 750's.Just got my first 200 lead bullets, going to go out and shoot them this weekend, the shipping on the lead bullets from Wisconsin to Alaska was 41.00! More than the bullets cost,oh well!

Thanks in advance

An Anchortown big bore get together sounds like a good plan. It will also give me some motivation to make the second recoil lug for my 500 Jeffrey, and then bed the action.

Even just getting together for lunch sometime wouldn't be a bad plan.

DD, $2k seems quite reasonable when you include the rifle, dies and brass. Downright cheap in fact. Has the 'smith done any other work for you?

With prices like that you could almost get one every year with your PFD.

I have a 375 Ultra on a model 70 CRF,a 338-06 on an FN mauser 98,had a 450 Marlin on an m700 action, sold that one(should not have!)a 458X2 on an m7oo and a heavy bareld 308 target rifle all done by him over the past four years. He does excellent work and is very personable, and an absolute ball of fun to shoot with! Did I mention his prices are very reasonable to!

DD - I'm thinking to have a scope mounted on mine (long eye relief, but not scout). Will I get a lot of Weatherby kisses? Or is the recoil so slow that is wouldnt be a problem? Thinking to use it for moose hunting in Norway, and hopefully an Africa safari in a few years.

The muzzle brake that you have is that your (or your gunsmiths) own design? Is it effective? Have you fired without it?

Edit:
Do KDF have muzzle brakes for 577NE 3"?? What is recommended wall thickness in a muzzle brake? Clearance to bullet? Went hole diameter?

I think you would be alright with a long eye relief scope. The recoil is slow. Yes the muzzle break is very effective,it is machined right into the bbl, probably would not want to shhot it without! That design is something the gunsmith came up with. He built a 585 Nyati here last year ,used the same kind of break.

DD,

I'm getting more interested in fishing, so it's a matter of my motivation as to when I'll have the 500 in shootable order. As far as finished, I'm thinking of making a stock from a blank this winter, and I need to make the bottom metal and work the rails, so likely a couple years on the pace the project has been proceding at. Heck, I still need to checker my 350 Rigby's stock, and properly blue it.
