Think I need a 45-70, I like the new Marlin BLS, havent had a lever action in 25 years, and am interested in the Ruger #1, I know I can probably get somewhat more performane out of the #1, and have never owned a #1, however if I go with a #1 I may want one chambered in the 460 S&W, due to the fact that I have a revolver chambered in the same. My question is what is the real accuracy differance between the two, and what would the real differnce be, if I choose the #1, between the 45-70 and 460 S&W.

I have a Marlin 1895 with 22" bbl, 1/2 magazine and pistol grip stock. I like the looks and balance. I have had a few No1's in the past. I like those too, but they are not very practical. The Marlin (product line)will surprise- they make a really nice gun. I also have an 1894 Marlin in 44mag. It makes a nice short range deer gun. I find the No1 in 45/70 a little too short and stubby for me. I wish they had a 24 or even a 26inch bbl for a more traditional rifle look and feel. The 22in bbl No1 is very short. I would stay away from the ported Marlin, a totally unnecessary option. I'll save my hearing thank you. What you really need is the 1894 Marlin in 460. I wonder if that could be done?

Hi Fella's, what do you reckon to the 45/70 Marlin for driven Boar? Thanks, Steve.

I dont know from experience but check this out: http://www.hornady.com/store/4...-FTX-LEVERevolution/ Gotta be one heck of a big pig to take a solid hit from that and not go down. I would say go for it. These exciting new 45/70 loads (not Hornady, everybody) show the reason we are better off with standards. IE. standards like 375HH or 416Rigby. The industiry can focus on making good guns and good loads. Imagine the chaos with 444,44/77,450marlin all competing for small piece of the pie. Until this stupidity stops with 5 different 416's we are not going to see price reduction or selection of ammo anywhere near what we have for the great old 45/70.

fourbore, I think the 460 might be a bit too high pressure for a lever, probably why we haven't seen one yet. I have seen a 500 S&W custom, but IIRC the 500 runs at lower pressure then the 460. I could be wrong. CLK230, The No 1 will out perform the 1895. If you look at reloading manuals, they have data for trap doors, 1895's and No 1's, the No 1 being the highest performance as its the strongest action of all of them. H&R makes the Handi Rifle in 45/70 and could at least handle 1895 pressures. Cheap way to play around with the 45/70! If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!
