When folks talk about a low power long eye relief scope for hard kicking DGR, are they talking about of the pistol scopes like the Leupold Pistol Scope - M8 2X Extended or a differant type of scope?

They are not generally talking about pistol scopes.
Sometimes this discussion centers around European scopes vs. American scopes. Euro scopes usually have less eye relief, than say, a Leupold. On a hard kicker, eye relief is an important consideration.
One thing nice about the Euro Swarovski is their eyepiece is on a spring shock absorber system, so if it does hit yoiu in the head it has some give to it.

38-72,
welcome, and great choice for a BP or gray powder rifle. I am doing a 38-90 as I type, or at least my gunsmith is. Another HiWall gone bad.

Welcome to the mad house Big Grin
As far as a scope for a Big Bore most of us are talking about
a rifle scope with good eye relief 3-5 in.
And say 1.5 X 5 or so and I Like a 30mm tube.
I Have a Tasco(hold on) Titan 1.25 X 4.5 X 26mm.
Has almost 50 rds 458 Lott ,full loads, and it works great. Have 5" eye relief. I like a tube that is the same size all the way to the end as the front ring won't be clamped on the front glass.
hope this helps

I received a notice of new products from Leupold. One item was an intermediate eye relief 2.5x8. It is intended for assault type guns but might work for long eye relief situations with DGRs.

Definatly not pistol scopes, Not even IER (intermediate eye relief) which are mounted forward of the reciever as in Scout rifles.

A good choise would be an M8 2.5x20mm which comes with a "remarkable eye relief".

I think most low powered scopes have more eye relief than higher powered ones, and same with the settings of a variable scope.
