CZ stocks and crossbolt jig
I originally posted this on the "Gunsmithing" forum ... no one seemed to have an answer. But then, it was on the "Big Bore" forum where I saw this posted...so here goes.

I've read on several of the forums here that the B-Square crossbolt jig will not work for CZ 550 Magnum stocks. However, it was never said what specifically prohibited it from working on these stocks. Does anyone know? I just purchased a CZ 550 Magnum and would do the job myself, but without the proper tools I'll have to take it to a smith ... plus, I have a 98 Mauser rebarreled to 458 Blaine that I would use the jig on anyway.
Any comments? Thanks guys.

Grove,
first - welcome to the forums

second, your original post was in gunsmithing,
crossposting is considered marginally rude (and if done all the time, very rude)

Third, you might read your original threads before crossposting... you were answered twice in an hour, and that was 5 hours before you crossposted.

Jeffeosso, I appologize for the rudeness of the cross post. I did read my original post thread and 2 people had responded ... one didn't understand either and the other gave his own method for crossbolting. At the time, your post was not there.

Thank you for the explanation why that jig would not work ... so, it's a matter of girth of the stock. Again, I appologize. Smiler

no need to appologize... was 5am ish and i was grumpy...

tom told me this, and it works GREAT
the cz can be xbolted on a drill press...

square up stock and locate hole

drill 1/2 the way with a 1/4" drill

remove stock

put a block in the vise.. drill a 1/4" hole...

NEVER let the block move out of square

stick a 1/4" dowel in the block that a little less than 1/2 way through

stick the drilled side on the dowel...

make sure it's square....

drill through...

then use the countersink to finish...

tom told me this, and it works GREAt

Jeffe, that is a good point on the Ruger rings QD.
Actually I prefer a big brass Chuckie Cheese token to carry in my pocket for QD-ing the rings on a Ruger. Best method. thumb

There is an even easier way if you have access to a Lathe. First Locate exactly where the crossbolt holes need to be on both sides of the stock. I use woodworkers calipers for this to keep things square. Put a correctly sized drill in the lathe chuck. Locate one hole with the live center in the tailstock, position the drill over the center of the other hole, rest and hold the stock on the bed ways and drill till you just meet the center by cranking the tailstock. Don't drill completely through or the wood will tear out. Then finish up the hole with a countersink Perfect holes every time! This is even more valuable in drilling the crossbolt holes in front of the mag box.-Rob
