I've had this on again, off again sick plan to build a 585 Nyati. The latest thought is, I could build it as a single shot on an M98, and it would be a fairly straight forward lathe job. After looking at Pac-Nor's web site, I was wondering if folks have gone with the #7 or #8 straight taper barrel.

PaulH-I used the Pac-nor number 7 contour, but only because a 8 would not fit in the Mcmillan express stock. You can do it on a M98, but I'd have it re-neat treated by someone with serious Mauser experience. This is way too much horsepower going off too close to your head to trust to a M98 that has not been certified. Personally, I'd use a FN action rather than a military M98, but I've seen it done that way. I honestly feel this cartridge exceeds the design criteria of a M98 and I continue to wonder how long such a combo will last until the receiver locking lugs set back. I'd also have the bolt re-hardened after you cut the bolt face. It might even be easier to go with a .590 boltface and rebate the rim as Seyfried did. Unless you can make a single stack mag forget about getting it to feed.-Rob

Paul my mate and I are both building .585's and we are using 26" tobler barrells and they will be double tapered in an attempt to do away with the drain pipe look. They finsh at aprox .98" there abouts at the muzzle. When I get the rifle I will give you exact measurements. ------------------

Building a single shot 585 on a m98 is really cutting corners. I would at least do it on a cz550 or an Olympic Arms BBK02.
