I am wondering if anyone knows of a .700 round that uses woodleigh .700 nitro bullets that could be adapted to the Montana PH actions ?? Is it feasible at all or does anyone have ideas ??

PC, Since the bolt is .8", you might be able to do to the 700 Nitro case what is done to the 577 Nitro case to get the 585 Nyati. In Cartridges of the World the 700 Nitro is listed as having a .780" head diamter, so perhaps if the rim is removed, a slightly rebated rim formed and the body make more parallel so as to be able to form a small shoulder then you would have an over grown 585 Nyati. It seems to me that Ed Hubel has a .700 wildcat on the .50 BMG case (.700 Hubel Express? Search on that) He'll probably check in here after the holidays if not sooner. I don't remember any of the details of his case, but running a .50 BMG case through a die that made it narrower (maybe not necessary), followed by rebating the rim from .8 to .750, trim and neck turn the brass, should get you a really good wildcat that will fit in the biggest MRC action, though you will probably need one of those Schuler-type magazines. A potential obstacle that occurs to me is the possibility that there will not be enough barrel thickness around the chamber to be safe. Anybody who realistically wants a .700 does not worry about dollars in quantities smaller than a 1000 at a time, but .700 Nitro express brass, is really, really expensive, and .50 BMG will get you a cheaper (maybe $1.00 each), better, stronger, higher pressure case. It will take a little work to get from .50 BMG to your .700 wildcat, but you will probably have to modify the .700 Nitro express case anyway, so no time lost.

Yup, all the answers are in the thread entitled "Where to After the .600 OK?"

You can use my 700HE shortened up and rebate the rim for .800 diameter bolt.BUT YOU CAN NOT USE FULL PRESSURE LOADS, as the barrel threads and hence the barrel aren't big enough diameter. For full pressure the barrel threads should be 1.35 in, where Mauser size is 1.10, with an 1.5 in barrel diameter.Could run 35,000 psi loads....Here is a picture of some I shortened. The one on the right is 2.9 in long, second from right is 3.15, third from right is 3.35 in.Fourth from right is regular 700HE. It isn't hard to rebate rims on these, which are the same size as the belt now. Belt and rim are now .795, and base ahead of belt is .775..Ed.

First, I sincerely doubt any .700 will work on a PH action due to inadequate barrel shank diameter and I would not do it even at low pressures. It would be a single shot anyway. Your way better off just buying a Mcmillan action and building a .700 based on the .50BMG case. This will work. There is a single shot action made by Borchard Rifle Co. That will take a .50 BMG case. That would be the way to go IMHO.-Rob

And Rob has the main point, IE get one big enough for safety. And then you don't need to shorten it at all and thus able to use lower pressures with a slower bulkier powder, so brass will go 50 or more rounds. In 20 years of shooting the money saved on brass will pay for big action.Ed.

PC what is the thread diameter of the PH

One problem with large cases in bolt actions is remember the locking lug inner collar needs to be at least .010-.020 larger in diameter than the bolt or forget about camming even a short cartridge up into the chamber much less a long one. When I looked at the Ph action my basic thought has been a .600 is about all this action could handle and then you'd be lucky!.-Rob

So rob & others realistically a .585 Nyati is about as big as one could go on the PH and maybe the .600 OK ??
