Has anyone had any experience with modified Browning BLR rifles? They are light, fast, relatively high capacity, extremely rapid cycling and available in magnum calibers. I would think that a 7mmMag or 300 Win Mag is only a new barrel and set of ghost ring hi viz sights away from an almost perfect buffalo rifle, if the barrel were chambered in something like .416 Taylor or .458 Win. The stock .450 marlin comes awfully close, although it's in the shor action. With a .450 barrel on a long action, some much better bullets could be loaded. Nothing against Teddy's .405, but this might be the perfect lion rifle.

Any thoughts, besides the weight and recoil?

Art, I had thoughts along the lines you're condidering except for wanting a black timber elk rifle in .358 Norma or .375-338. My gunsmith doesn't think the rebarreling would be a problem but is holding off doing anything until I come to my senses. He had a potential donor rifle in 7mm Rem and said it wasn't the most comfortable rifle to shoot if you used 175 gr bullets. He thought I'd lost my mind wanting to shoot 270 - 300 grain bullets at respectable velocities so the donor rifle got sold to protect me from myself. There'd be quite a bit of reshaping of the stock to get it comfortably usable with iron sights. Stll, it is an intriguing project. There was a gunsmith in Tacoma WA I once talked to that had made a couple BLR's into .358 Norma's and said all was fine. Ed

I'll be building a friend either a 416 barnes on a 71 or a 416 taylor on a blr...

I've HEARD of a 458 on a BAR.. but not for africa..

THe 416 T, if kept sane, would be a great round for a blr.. I would suggest using the 300 win version, if possible, that way yuo can set your bullets longer, if need

Would the action be strong enough for the Taylor ??

It is a shame they do not come with a hardy synthetic stock. Thos glossy wood ones on the new blr's make me puke.
