Guys,
With less than a month before my Tanzanian hunt for buff my 1.75x6E Leupold started doing strange things indicating it needs a trip back to Beaverton, OR. I have an American Zeiss 3x9 with a one inch tube in the safe I haven't mounted on anything else. Has anyone used one on their .375 or larger and what was your experience. I don't want to have to buy another scope if I don't have to and I can't switch guns because I already have my Tanzanian gun permits in place. Thoughts???????????????

I had the same problem when a scope went south about a couple of months before I left for Namibia. I had a 3.5-10 Zeiss Conquest that was new and unmounted , so I stuck it on my .375 and it worked great. Obviously not that much power is needed on a .375, 6x on the high side is plenty. It flew on the plane, never needed sighted in after arrival, survived a slam down on a rockpile when I fell down right before anchoring a zebra. I checked it after i returned home, still dead on.

I've had a 3x9 Zeiss on a .375 for years for use on Kodiak. Never a bit of trouble and 9x is helpful at times for looking through the bushes.

It is really a better scope than the Leupold anyway.

I have one on a 7 pound 300 RUM. The recoil figures for this gun are a little higher than an 8.5 pound 375 H&H. Mine has shot and traveled alot over the past 3 1/2 years, and I haven't taken the turret caps off since the day I mounted the scope and sighted it in 2.5 inches high at 100 with 180 gr Partitions.

FWIW. I think they're excellent scopes, and can handle 375-range recoil fine.

Have a 3-9x Conquest on a .375 H&H.

Total rifle weight is abt 9 1/4 lbs.

Lots of 235s at nearly 3000 fps and many 270's at standard velocity. Don't shoot many 300s.

Has done beautifully for the last year or so.

How's the eye-relief on those Zeiss units?

I'm wondering if it's tight with a .375 or if there's a trick to rolling with the recoil!

I'm under the impression that the closer to 4" or more, the better when it comes to space between my glasses/forehead and the end of a riflescope. [Eek!]

I have a Conquest 3x9 on my pre-64 375 H&H. Eye relief is a constant 4". Shooting from the bench or various field positions is no problem.

This was my first Conquest and I've enjoyed it immensely. After 2000 hunting loads down the tube the scope still functions flawlessly.

Good luck on ya.

The scope will work fine on your 375, it is a good durable scope.

I would still take a spare scope to Africa. If you are traveling that far you should have a back up plan.

I have the 3 X 9 Ziess Conquest mounted on a .416 Rem, and on a .416 Rigby. I really like the scopes. I was considering a fixed 3 power, or 1.5 X 5, then decided heck, why not a 3 X 9, now I am glad I did. [Wink] Good shooting.

Bwanamrm, if it is the Zeiss Diavari, I had one fail on a hunt in Namibia on a 300 H&H. No damage but riding in the rack on the hunting vehicle and the erector froze, locking the thing on about 7 power. Zeiss told me it was a fairly common problem and replaced the scope. If your scope is a Conquest, my experience with a 3.5-10 would indicate it's about as bulletproof as they come. Also, the 375 is not too hard on scopes. It is the delta V of recoil that most impacts a scope and the 375 is fairly tame in that category as compared to some lesser calibers that produce a bigger jolt at ignition.

Thanks for the input gentlemen. I feel better about the Zeiss. Picked up my .375 from the 'smith. He mounted and boresighted the Zeiss today. Will have her out on the range this weekend. As an aside, he called Leupold about the scope and my situation. They said to fedex it to them and I should have it back by the end of next week to carry as a spare. They have always had great service! Comforting to have a spare scope on a one gun safari.
