Hey guys,

Please post your pet loads for the 404 Jeffery. Looking for some good loads and powders for my 404. I am looking at using the 400 gr Barnes TSX and 400 gr swift A Frames. Thanks in advance!

I like H4350 best and 84gn under the 400gn Woodleigh (and a RWS Solid) gets me away at 2335fps with Fed 215's.

I use 75 grains of R15 with Hornady brass, Federal 215 Gold Medal Match primers and Woodleigh 400 grain bullets.

I like the load but will be following this post with interest to see what others use.

What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?

83gr IMR4831 Norma brass 400gr SAF Fed215 Avg Vel 2200 fps
82gr IMR4831 Norma brass 400gr BBS Fed215 Avg Vel 2200 fps

I found this soft and solid combo to overlap as a set of 3 shot groupings in my load development/shooting practice.

What kind of accuracy are you getting as well? These loads will be the first I try. If you have more please post. Great info for the great 404 Jeffery!

These are all at 55 yds through an aperture sight. Some of you with scoped rifles may get tighter but I am more than happy with this.

This was during initial testing. 2209 is H4350 and initially I got a 1 lb can but subsequentially got an 8 lb keg and the new lot upped the velocity by 20-25 fps

I have done a bit of casting with a 350gn GC bullet that I have run from 1900fps to 2365fps
1900fps is very accurate.

At 2365fps over 74gn 2208 (Varget)accuracy drops off a bit

Norma Brass, Fed 215M primers, Varget (at DSC and no access to charge data), North Fork 380 grain Softs and Cup Points.

Used the 380 grain Norht Fork Softs on recent trip to Tanzania on two big buff only recovering one bullet that was a perfect mushroon, weight - 355 grains. This load was extremely accurate in my rifle.

Good luck...

Here are my notes on my .404 Jeffery:

On 9/12/07 I was back at the range. I tried 83, 84, and 85 grains of IMR-4831 with the same case, primer, and bullet. Eighty three grains of IMR-4831 gave a velocity of 2153 fps: 84 grains gave a velocity of 2178 fps; and, 85 grains gave a velocity of 2230 fps. The pet load that I have settled on is a Norma case, Federal 215 magnum primer, 83 grains of IMR-4831 and a 400 grain Woodleigh soft.

8 shots (4 each) of 83 gr H4350 behind both a 400 gr A-frame and Woodie solids went into 2.25" at 100 yards out of my Heym bolt rifle. Velocity was just a hair under 2300 fps....about 2285 to be exact. Never have bothered to change that load....too nice to shoot and, obviously, very accurate.

I use 72.2gr of IMR4064 with woodleigh 400 gr and large rifle magnum primers. I get 2185 fps.

use at your own risk, start below this and work up gradually, any load given is given only for purposes of illustration and is not recommended for use in your, my, or your mother-in-laws gun, well maybe your mother-in-laws, if you are foolish enough to engage in inherently risky activities such as playing with gunpowder and primers, you deserve any misfortune that becomes you, trained professionals, don't try this at home kids.
Have I satisfied the lawyers yet?

The new Hornady manual indicated RL 17 is excellent for velocity and accuracy. I tried RL 17 at their suggested charge weights and saw what they said in terms of velocity. You will probably need to crimp your bullets lightly. If you search the AR board for 404 Jeffery load data you will find a PDF of the Hornady data in hand written form posted by another member.
