Why doesn't Wby chamber for the .500 A-Square?

500grainsWhy doesn't Wby chamber for the .500 A-Square?
They could call it the .500 Weatherby if they wanted to. The demand is certainly there.

Tex21Two reasons:
Weatherby didn't invent it; A-Square did.
It is doubtful A-Square desires to surrender the rights to their cartridge to allow Weatherby to change the name.
Still...
With Weatherby's love of all things fast and overly powerful, I'm surprised they haven't picked up the 500 A-Square as well. This would seem to the logical extension of the 460 - necking it up to .50 caliber.

Omnivorous_Bob500gn, I'm with you.
A fine cartidge, in keeping with their "biggest/badest" persona, practical, they could claim ol'Roy invented it in '47, vastly better lineage than an a^2, and they could sell even more of their 2-down push feeds.
Having said that, I have my Dad's W.German 300WM that I dearly love, but hunt with other guns.

My thoghts exactly! They would not have to deal with another brands name, then. AND it is the biggest!
Now, why Dan would suggest a DG chambering in a Weatherby, is to me a far more interesting question!

jeffeossoActually,

fla3006The bottom rifle in this pic was built in California sometime during the 60s, has no markings on the 30" Pendleton braked barrel, but the dies are marked 500-460Wby. The California seller speculated it is a Weatherby experimental rifle but could not confirm it. Is built on a plain-jane myrtle stock, Brevex action like the first 460s, polished similar to same period Weatherbys:
NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS.

What rights?
A2 has no legal protection for the dimension of the 500 A2. Anyone can build rifles to that spec. and call them something else if they want.

GeorgeSI'm sure they based their decision on current market trends, and sales of similar cartridges in their lineup.
They must figure that if the .460Wby. hasn't taken the world by storm, a .500Wby (as offered by Weatherby in of their Mark V rifles) wouldn't either.

Gringo CazadorIts my understanding that Wby chambers rifels in 338/06 Asquare, they may even make brass for it with wby headstamp, my guess not much demand for 500.

AfricanHunterI think they should so it, if for no other reason to give some another reason the bitch about the Mark V push feed in a DG rifle!

ROSCOEI think weatherby is in trouble financially and doubt they will be introducing any new rifles anytime soon. Most of their sales come from the Vanguard line which they import from Europe. Not much money in the Mark V any more. To be honest I wonder if they are soon to fallow Winchester to the grave.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! You had best check your info. The Vanguards are made in Japan by the same firm that makes the Howa.

yes, they perfected the worst possible DGR round and rifle at the same time.
Now, load it down to 2300-2400 fps, and you have a good round....
the invented the perfect big bore CASE... blow it straight, trim it off to 2.65" and put a 700gr pill in it...
no, wait, that's the 550express.....
