I think it is a nice cartridge. It shoots cheap .357 revolver bullets for practice (so you have bullets as light as 110grains -- launch them at 3100fps or more and you have a helluva varmint exploder!). Recoil isn't much at all with such light bullets (although the muzzle blast and flash is impressive).

At the heavy end of the spectrum, the .358 Norma Mag can shoot 310grain bullets with a sectional density of .346 for more penetration than is often needed.

Bullets of 225 and 250 grains are "normal" and have a trajectory very similar to a 30-06 with streamlined 180gr bullet, so it is easily a 300m cartridge (and of course packs a lot of energy and makes a good-sized hole when it gets there). It certainly is not limited to being a "short range brush buster".

I sure wouldn't recommend the 358 NM to a non-handloader though. If I didn't handload I'd be using a .338 Win Mag, and in fact the .338 Win mag is why the 358 Norma Mag is not more common.
