470 Mbogo brass: Quality Cartridge is still waiting on some tooling. Peter Cardona said he might be able to start making the brass in a couple of weeks. Hope springs eternal! 470 Mbogo reloading dies: Dave Davison at CH4D said they would finally be ready in early December 2002. Anticipation! 470 Mbogo reamer and headspace guages: I got these last month. They only took 3 months to ship from JGS. However, the removable pilot was 0.0015" oversize for the Pac-Nor barrel, so another pilot was ordered and is supposedly on the way. All this waiting has given me time to change my mind from rebarreling my CZ 550 in 378 Wby to instead rebarrel the BBK-02 in 460 Wby. The 378 Wby instead goes into the Armtec synthetic stock from RSA (courtesy of Nickudu and his pal) with a new Pachmayr Triple Magnum pad. And it will get the Sightron 4X-16X mildot scope to see if I can destroy the scope. The 460 Wby barrel will become a switch barrel sharing a Mark V action with a 30-378 barrel. The Pac-Nor #6 sporter contour, stainless, 6-groove, 1 in 16" twist barrel is in hand, having arrived promptly, as promised by Pac-Nor, long ago. This barrel will be screwed into the BBK-02 action and bedded in a thoroughly reinforced laminate stock. Barrel recoil lug, NECG front sight, barrel band sling swivel base, and Dakota express rear sight will be added to the barrel. The cross bolts in the stock, total of 4: 1- exposed behind the barrel recoil lug 1- exposed behind the main action recoil lug 1- hidden behind the main action recoil lug 1- exposed behind the magazine box An axial cross bolt through the pistol grip area is hidden, and is a 5/8" thick threaded steel bolt/rod that is about 6" long and seated in epoxy to over flow. There are 5 steel rods in this stock. There are 2 steel spacers, a la Mauser, epoxied into this stock for pillar bedding. That makes seven steel cylinders (solid bolts and tubular spacers become pillars) imbedded in this stock: 4 in the X axis (cross bolts) 2 in the Y axis (pillars) 1 in the Z axis (axial grip bolt) The barrel will be free floated forward of the barrel recoil lug, contact bedded aft of that. The tang area of the stock is spaciously relieved. I did all the stock bedding and reinforcing myself, when the stock was on the 460 Wby. It is painted with clear epoxy inside and out wherever the Acraglass bedding or the butt pad did not cover, but I may sand it down and paint it again, adding textured grip panels. I will see if the 470 Mbogo needs a new pad, but for now it is a 1" thick Decelerator. Parts is parts. I shall endeavor to persevere in awaiting the arrival of the remainder parts.

To place the a bolt in the pistol grip, did you go rear ward from the action inletting or drill forward from the but plate? Sounds like one hell of a reenforced stock. Kristofer

RAB, Sounds AWESOME and Ifin you don't mind, I'll be incorporating an idea or 2 of my own... Can I buy/borrow your 470 headspace gages in late Jan? My buddy, Mike, is working on an mbogo.. no, wait, I am doing the 470 for Mike, while I work on my 500j Jeffe

KBGuns, I went rearward from the action side and patched up with poured in epoxy and the rest of the epoxied spacers and cross bolts. The three exposed cross bolts are covered with rosewood plugs, all epoxied in and sanded flush with the stock to show their locations on the stock. The rest are hidden. It does add some weight to the stock, but not as much as mercury or lead added to the butt, which I will not have to do, though I might want to add some weight to the forend if it is too muzzle light with the skinny Pac-Nor barrel. jeffeosso, We can work something out whenever I get mine built. Everything is taking twice as long, or more, than the estimates going in. GSC is not the only company having trouble delivering on time.

quote:RAB, that's exactly what we've been seeing, but... I told mike to go ahead and order 20 pieces of BELL unformed 416 rigby (for like 24$, btw) and we'll have starting loads. I am expecting the dies before the brass... yep, let's chat on the gages!!! jeffe

Hi Jeffeosso, I'm forwarding my reamer and headspace gauges to Pac-Nor. Are they only chambering the barrel or are they fitting the barrel and action. If they are only chambering the barrel they can forward the gauges and reamer to you so you can finish the headspacing. Send me an e-mail and let me know. Take care, 470 Mbogo

I also have a 470 MBOGO Reamer and Headspace guages if anyone needs them. FWIW I was able to load some 470 MBOGO's brass using a 470 NE crimping die and a homemade neck sizer. I too am awaiting the 470 Dies from C4HD. I talked to Dave on friday and he says that perhaps by christmas or early next year we should get them. They are being heat treated as we speak. Dagga-Ron- That's one heck of alot of reinforcing of that stock. There is no way with all of that done to it that it will crack. Personally, I believe that a crossbolt just behind the rear action screw is a darn good idea. In this position it should reinforce the grip area and spread the recoil forces. You see all too many stocks cracked at the grip just behind the tang. I have always questioned what a crossbolt behind the magazine does for anyone! They even look ugly there, as with some actions i'e. the Cz550 they musy be positioned quite low to clear the trigger assembly. I've noted that Rigby and Johnansen don't use the at all behind the mag box, but rely on good dense wood and a barrel lug with one crossbold behind the foreward action screw. Personally, I think a barrel lug and one crossbolt will do fine. I've never seen a gun with these two features properly installed that cracked it's stock. With that said I have a piece of incredibly dense Bastonne that I intend to use on the .600 OK with two crossbolts and a barrel lug.-Rob

Rob, If I can get a fifth crossbolt through the rear of tang area, I will. The big axial grip area bolt may interfere. X-rays may be in order. I just don't trust these veneer laminated stocks like I trust good walnut or a good synthetic stock like McMillan. I think all the laminate stocks are same except for the Acra-bond, which is a cut above. If Ming's BBK-01 stock that McMillan is making will fit my BBK-02, I will get one of those too. The Pac-Nor #6 barrel is .750" at the muzzle and is like a #5 sporter contour compared to many other makers. Ought to fit the standard McMillan barrel channel from the factory with minimum fuss.

Why try to avoid the grip bolt, put the cross bolt right tru its center. Kristofer

quote:470 yep, that's mike's gun... I got him stoked up about the 470 about 6 months ago, and now I am pushing him to order his stuff. They are only chambering.. He'll come over with his barrel, and I'll spend awhile with him, as I don't charge him, he's happy on the fitting. We might need to do exactly that.. forward the gages, that would be GREAT

KBGuns, Now there is an idea. I should drill and tap a hole through the big grip bolt to screw in a smaller cross bolt to "X" this area to death, like a pig given a Texas Heart Shot and a Broadside simultaneously.

RAB, you will end up with a sturdy steel stock with laminate siding. Kristofer [ 12-09-2002, 10:39: Message edited by: KBGuns ]

Daggaron-I have a laminated stock on my 470 MBOGO from ElkRidge. This was a cheap 1917 enfield stock. I'm not impressed either with Laminate stocks to tell the truth. The wood spinters easily and works like cutting epoxy ( which it is). I don't trust it either. I used a second barrel lug on mine , one crossbolt behind the action lug and steel bedded everything else. So far it's ok but I've only fired 5 full powered rounds. I ususally go with a #7 or #8 pac-Nor contour for the weight and look.-Rob
